At our April 8 chapter meeting on Zoom, our guest speakers will be from InnoCaption. InnoCaption is the only mobile app that offers real-time captioning of phone calls through live stenographers and automated speech recognition software – the choice is yours.

Their technology makes phone calls easy and accessible for the deaf and hard of hearing community.

How are you doing?  Our Board of Directors has been calling members to check up on them to see how they're doing.  Maybe you got a call?

Our LipReading class is continuing to meet weekly through Zoom.  Thanks go out to Linda DeGuire and several of the loyal classmates who have mastered the use of video-conferencing!

Our long-time captioner, Saba McKinley, is moving to Tennessee!   We will miss her smile and the wonderful captioning she has provided for us these past several years.  Good luck in your new home, Saba!

Federal, state and local disability laws are intended to bring people with all manner of disabilities, including hearing loss, into the mainstream of public life. But implementing those laws in practice is up to affected individuals. How well do you understand your accessibility rights? What steps can or should you take if you feel your rights have been denied?

Marc Fliedner, J.D., Attorney and Director of the PAIR Program (Protection & Advocacy for Individual Rights), including the rights of individuals with physical disabilities) at the New York City office of Disability Rights New York; DRNY is part of a nationwide network of legally-based disability rights agencies mandated by federal law to protect and advocate for individuals with disabilities.
John Herrion, J.D., Attorney and Director of Disability Rights for the New York State Division of Human Rights.
John Waldo, J.D., Attorney whose practice focuses on improving access to public life for people with hearing loss, an emphasis that combines his 30-plus years of legal practice with his own life experience with hearing loss.

Psychology of Hearing Loss explores hearing loss from a biopsychosocial perspective with particular attention to individual development and personal experience. Feelings and behaviors associated with hearing loss will be explored with additional information on special populations including Veterans and users of cochlear implants.

Don Doherty is a retired Marine Corps combat Veteran (1965-1987) who lost his hearing in Vietnam. He has worn hearing aids since June 1970 and received a cochlear implant in 2020. He retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2016 after 25 years’ service.  He was the education specialist for the National Chaplain Training Center which served more than 1,100 Department of Veterans Affairs Chaplains at over 153 Veterans Affairs Medical Centers nationwide. Don is actively involved with HLAA and has been a member for more than 25 years.
