This is an urgent alert from the Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW

Warning for Friday-Saturday
A cold front will move along the coast during Friday, bringing fresh to strong southerly winds, with a large southerly swell developing in its wake. Winds are expected to ease during the weekend as a high currently in the Bight moves to the Tasman Sea, but powerful southerly swells are likely to linger through to at least Sunday.

BOM has issued warnings for Friday for the Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast and for Saturday for the ENTIRE NSW coast.

On Friday, seas are expected to be 2 to 4 metres plus southerly swell of 4 metres. On Saturday, seas will be 2.5 metres and southerly swell will be 4 metres.

Large and powerful surf conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.

Check local forecasts on the BOM website at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml

Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on coming back. If the rock platform is wet ask yourself 'why is it wet?' then watch the ocean for waves and swells for at least 20 minutes. Always fish with a friend, wear proper rockfishing footwear, light warm high-visibility clothing, and wear a life jacket in case you get washed in. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Also check out the links and safety advice on BOM's dedicated rock-fishing weather page.

Whenever you fish

  • choose a safe spot
  • don't fish alone
  • wear non-slip shoes
  • wear a life jacket
