Boat Sinking On Pittsburgh’s North Shore As River Levels Rise

With Pittsburgh’s rivers reaching flood stages in some areas, a boat on the North Shore is sinking. The call for an unoccupied sinking boat at 525 North Shore Drive came into River Rescue around 4:30 p.m. Monday. KDKA was told the boat was tied up and has been there for a while. When the river started to rise, the boat tipped over. The rain has wrapped up, but the 1-2 inches that’s fallen along with the more than 8 inches of snow melting over the past week will help swell rivers. The Pittsburgh Department of Public Works says the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers have reached flood stage at several areas in the city. The Point State Park Riverfront, 10th Street Bypass, Mon Wharf Lot and Riverfront and North Shore Riverfront are all closed.

Riverlife proposes parks in Strip District, West End to complete Pittsburgh trail system

Riverlife unveiled an ambitious 10-year plan Thursday to fill in gaps in the riverfront trail system around the Golden Triangle and recommended major projects including parks in the Strip District and beneath the West End Bridge.

The plan is a followup to the nonprofit advocacy group’s push for riverfront development in a loop that runs from the 31st Street Bridge on the Allegheny River to the West End Bridge over the Ohio and the Hot Metal Bridge over the Monongahela. The original plan, which evolved over two decades, prompted $4.2 billion in riverfront improvements in the 15-mile area, but it left gaps in several places that the agency is making a special effort to fill, said Matt Galluzzo, the agency’s president and CEO.

After working for more than a year with architectural consultant evovleEA through a series of virtual meetings, the agency presented its recommendations to more than 300 people during an online meeting. More than 3,600 people participated in surveys and input meetings the agency held, showing what Mr. Galluzzo called “a palpable urgency” for improvements.

Woman rescued from submerged car near Brownsville

A motorist had to be rescued Monday morning when she attempted to drive across a flooded road near Brownsville and her car quickly became submerged under water.

Rescuers were called about 7 a.m. for two vehicles that were stuck in high water as Redstone Creek overflowed its banks onto Brownsville Road near the Albany Tunnel about a mile north of Brownsville, according to Fayette County Emergency Management spokeswoman Susan Griffith.

One driver was able to escape, while a female motorist had to wait until a water rescue team from the Brownsville Fire Company was able to pull her to safety shortly after 8 a.m., Griffith said. The woman’s name and whether she was injured were not released.

Targeted Study Highlight: Pithole Creek

The Pithole Creek Watershed, located in Venango and Forest counties of Pennsylvania, has a history of conventional oil production that dates back to 1865. As of 2018, the watershed contained 950 active conventional wells and many townships had used produced water for dust control on its dirt and gravel roads. 3RQ worked to shed light onto the impacts of this oil production on stream integrity.
