It's Not Only Children.

Nobody wants to talk about the abuse of adults in the Catholic Church. It's a complex and painful issue, and we're often tempted to focus exclusively on children who have been harmed. But there are many survivors of sexual abuse in our Church who experienced this abuse when they were adults, and their stories matter too.

This issue is very close to my heart, because these people are close to my heart. Some of my best friends are women who have experienced sexual abuse by priests. I can't even begin to describe the physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering that results from this kind of assault - and from the way that they are often excluded from our conversations about abuse in the Church, as if their suffering didn't matter.

Awake is committed to lifting up the voices of all survivors, no matter what age they were when the abuse occurred. We are proud to be focusing this month's Courageous Conversation on addressing the sexual abuse of adults in the Catholic Church, and I hope you will join us.
