Vol. CXXVII, Issue XXXXIII

Hi. Here's the news.
SGA and city-wide election results trickled in Tuesday night. Alabama gymnastics has only one regular season meet left, and a conference title is well within reach. And the UA System announced its intentions for a return to in-person, full-capacity classes in the fall.

UA juniors could very well have their senior year run as planned. The University currently plans to return to a pre-pandemic normal in the fall, with classes in person and at full capacity. It remains unclear if mask guidance will change in the coming semesters. Alabama gymnastics has gone without an SEC title for the last five seasons. In 2015, Dana Duckworth became the first in league history to win an SEC title as a first-year head coach. Just one team stands in the way of Duckworth's second conference title. SGA election season is officially over. Okay, it’s almost over. The election results are in, and three senate seats will go to a run-off. The seats are in the Law School and Graduate School.

UA softball players were ready to dominate last weekend. The team managed three shutouts over North Carolina and Troy for a sweep of its Tuscaloosa-hosted tournament.

Celebrities have always been a little above the law. And under pandemic quarantine restrictions, many of them have decided to totally let loose—whether that means an island getaway or elaborate birthday dinners flaunting city ordinances. As one columnist writes, it may be the end of an era for celebrities whose decadence has long been admired.

Tuscaloosans rehired Mayor Walt Maddox for four more years. The new term will be Maddox’s fifth, and his first since he entered the 2018 gubernatorial race.

Women’s basketball ended the season with disappointment. A loss to Arkansas on Sunday made two in a row for the team, which will face Missouri in the SEC Tournament Thursday. Marvel Studios doesn't usually have a problem getting the attention of its fans. But that didn't stop the moviemaking giant from trying out a publicity stunt in the title release of its upcoming Spider-Man movie.

Alabama men’s golf had a disappointing Sunday on the course. At the LSU Invitational, the team was disqualified in the second round. Players carried on and managed steady individual scores.
Here are the off-campus goings-on:
  • Gov. Kay Ivey is expected to make an announcement regarding Alabama’s mask order on Thursday at 11 a.m. A spokesperson’s statement did indicate that Ivey would prefer to rescind the mask mandate.
  • Mississippi’s mask mandate has run its course, as has the one in Oxford. However, officials at the University of Mississippi have clarified that masks will still be mandated in indoor campus facilities.
  • A deal brokered by the White House means that all hands are on deck to manufacture the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Merck & Co., a pharmaceutical manufacturer, will also begin producing the vaccine. Joe Biden said Tuesday that he expects there will be enough vaccines for every adult in America in May.

Don’t you spend all day staring at Zooms and emails anyway? For the sake of our eyes and our self-esteem, it’s time we all consider a social media detox. You can catch up on a dust infected book buried on your bookshelf, or even discover a new craft. Who knows, you could develop a random passion you never considered or even get back to a healthier sleep schedule. This is me giving you permission to put your phone down.
