Q. Who makes challah without eggs?!
- B’nai Abraham, the Chabad preschool where I taught in Philadelphia.
Q. Why?
- Because one child had an egg allergy.
Q. How did that work out?
- The children loved their own challahs! They had ownership of that piece of dough that they played with and shaped into a braid-like offering for Shabbat. It was their own challah that smelled so good in the big ovens and just to make sure—just a little bite—yes, it tasted awesome, Then into their Friday take-home bag it went.
Q. Did the children know the eggs were omitted?
- Yes, and they learned it was done out of Gemilut Chasadim, compassion, for the unnamed allergic student. These young children were taught to be proud of themselves for happily owning this inclusive solution.
For Hadassah, I believe this sense of ownership is the charoset, the paste, that holds us together. I often hear, “I’m a Life Member of Hadassah!” proudly spoken. We belong to and feel ownership of a compassionate organization whose mission is to inspire a passion for and commitment to the land and people of Israel through medicine and the best health care.
I believe compassion can inspire creativity that makes a big difference. Across the world, Oz, a preschooler, being treated at Hadassah for testicular cancer, throws a fit at being examined. Chief of Urology, Dr. Guy Hidas, begins his visit by giving an exam…to a toy airplane. He puts the airplane down next to the little boy. First, the doctor examines the airplane. “If you let me check you, too, then we can go fly the plane together,” Hidas promises the now-intrigued three-year old.
Oz submitted to the exam, and patient and doctor ran down the Hadassah corridors, making engine roaring sounds and flying the jet to imaginary destinations. Says Oz’s Mom, “When we got home, Oz told me how much fun the hospital visit was. Dr. Hidas is an amazing person, not just a physician, who has made us also feel secure through this worrisome disease. There is no limit to our appreciation for the creative and compassionate staff at Hadassah Hospital.”
Q. During ordinary times, who schedules a tour of a hospital when going on a vacation?
A. Hadassah members do! Be sure to see our Nurses Station in Internal Medicine, in the Round Building at Hadassah Ein Kerem. You can all be proud owners by raising funds for this gift at our April Gala, honoring nurses.
