Join us for a bird walk this spring led by a local biologist at Westcave Preserve! 

 

Westcave hosts over 170 species of birds and spring migration is one of the best times to experience our avian population. From the endangered golden-cheecked warbler to the colorful painted bunting, we have it all!  All levels of birders are welcome. Binoculars are provided, if needed.

This event does not include access to our grotto. To visit the waterfalll and cave area, please sign up for a Walk Through The Grotto experience.

Hike Austin Photography Workshop

Learn how to capture amazing landscapes on your next adventure!

Interested in getting your feet wet in photography? Join President & Founder of @HikeAustin (Instagram), Matthew Guthrie, and fellow photographer Thomas Donegan in this exclusive 10 person Hike Austin Photography workshop at Westcave Preserve. This workshop will take participants along a 15 minute walk from an arid savanna through a limestone crevice down a 100 foot staircase into a sheltered canyon of lush plant life. At the head of the canyon stands a stunning 40-foot waterfall replenishing the emerald pool below!

Guests will have over an hour to photograph and absorb the beauty of the grotto area with expert guidance. Not only will you learn some tips and tricks about photography, but your guides will point out different angles that you can capture the beauty of Westcave’s grotto.

Please bring your own camera and tripod. A DSLR camera is recommended for this workshop.

Wildflower Walk

Spring is the perfect time to witness the Hill Country transform into a painted landscape of wildflowers.

These hikes are led by a local expert biologist. Come out for an expert-guided walk on the Uplands and find out what is blooming. The Wildflower Walk winds through 1.5 miles of trails. We recommend wearing closed toe shoes and bringing water.

Family Bird and Nature Hike

Join us for a birding and nature walk for the whole family! The focus will be on having fun learning about and being in nature. We will look and listen for birds, as well as any other interesting flower, bug, or lizard we happen to come across on our walk. The trails are flat, and the group can expect to walk about one mile or less at a slow and easy pace. No experience with birding is necessary, and no special equipment is needed. All ages welcome.

Origin Stories:
Westcave in Eight Plants Hike

Join us as we take a deep dive into the incredible stories of eight iconic plants and trees that make up the rich history and biodiversity of Westcave Preserve. Follow in the footsteps of this far out cast of characters as they journeyed from parts around the globe to descend on this harsh, unpredictable environment. Learn about the mechanisms, adaptations, and partnerships they picked up along the way that allow them to survive and thrive in the Hill Country. From the Arctic to the tropics and spanning hundreds of millions of years, the stories of our most silent residents are by far the most interesting.
