How Duoc UC Beat the Odds and Increased Student Enrollment during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Author: Rodrigo Nuñez, Director International Affairs Duoc UC, Board member WFCP

Duoc UC is a Chilean professional institute founded by the Catholic University of Chile in 1968 with the mission to train people in the field of technical and professional education committed to the development of society.

With more than 50 years of history and the highest institutional accreditation for seven years, Duoc UC today has 9 schools, more than 70 programmes and 18 campuses located in five regions of the country and represents more than 20% of the country's total enrolment in higher technical education.

At the beginning of the 2020 academic year, the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic hit education institutions across the globe. All, without exception and according to their capacities, had to innovate and strive to provide continuity and not interrupt classes. This situation had short-, medium- and long-term impacts.

One of the short term impacts for Duoc UC was a decrease in enrolment. Given the scenario of uncertainty, many applicants and enrolled students postponed their studies temporarily. At the close of the process in 2020, Duoc's enrolment was 12% lower than projected.

The successive waves of contagion predicted an even more complex scenario for the 2021 enrolment.

However, and against all odds, Duoc UC filled the vacancies three weeks before the closing of the period, including those whose industry sectors had been hit hard, such as tourism and gastronomy, for example.

We believe that the success in enrolment is based on three pillars:
  1. Uncertainty factor: internal databases and information show that people who postponed their studies last year have now enrolled. Even in the context of a pandemic, uncertainty is lower. In addition, there was a 20% increase in the enrolment of people over 30 years of age, confirming the thesis that in periods of crisis people seek to improve their skills and study in technical and vocational areas.
  2. Brand factor: Marketing shows that, in times of crisis, people seek refuge in prestigious brands. Representation in the education sector and accreditation mitigate uncertainty in this respect.
  3. Communication factor: Many other technical education institutions maintained their traditional campaigns appealing to prestige and quality. Duoc UC, on the other hand, was consistent with its premise of "training adaptable people". What it did was to show that at the institutional level this time we had adapted the educational process so that all students could continue their studies.

In short, what it did was to take uncertainty and transform it into certainty, thus conveying reassurance.
FPEmpresa Joins the STEAM Alliance for Women’s Talent Promoted by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training

FPEmpresa VET Schools Association is one of the more than 40 institutions that have joined the STEAM Alliance for women’s talent “Niñas en pie de ciencia” (Girls ready for science), promoted by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training. The endorsement of this alliance takes place under the frame of FPEmpresa’s objective to collaborate with public administrations, from all the Spanish regions, in those initiatives that lead to a positive impact in the field of VET.

This initiative is aimed at strengthening STEAM professions (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) among young girls. Its objective is to join efforts, foster synergies and promote projects that contribute to the design of an education system that removes gender stereotypes associated with certain professions; an education system that encourages women's empowerment within STEAM professions from initial stages of education and that helps eliminating the gender gap in the access to these disciplines.

“Contributing to the reduction of the gender gap in the labour market is one of the objectives of FPEmpresa”, Luis García, president of FPEmpresa, highlights. He states that “technological and industrial maintenance courses are, generally speaking, less demanded by women” and he believes that these studies “usually represent more stable and high-quality job opportunities”.

The Alliance will have an annual plan of work, in which goals, agenda and resources will be detailed. Furthermore, this plan will allow to follow up all the promoted lines of action. Among other initiatives, it is expected to create a quality stamp for schools, to launch a call for projects on STEAM and to elaborate a Career Orientation Programme focused on STEAM professions, with gender perspective.

The STEAM Alliance for women’s talent “Niñas en pie de ciencia” (Girls ready for science) was presented publicly on the 11th of February 2021, coinciding with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Join WFCP's new Indigenous Education Affinity Group

The World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics invites you to join our new Indigenous Education Affinity Group, chaired by Kory Wilson, Kwakwaka’wakw from the Northwest Coast of British Columbia and the executive director of Indigenous Initiatives and Partnerships at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).

The vision of the Indigenous Education Affinity Group is to:
  • Allow those interested to connect and work together to advance the voice of Indigenous people and rid the Academy of systemic barriers that have long marginalised Indigenous learners,
  • Provide input on advocacy priorities and positions related to Indigenous education and skills development,
  • Act as a forum to enable leaders and Indigenous education practitioners of associations, institutes and affiliates committed to professional and technical education and training (PTET) to support each other and build capacity to serve Indigenous learners and communities in every country,
  • Advise on the issues related to Indigenous education in PTET around the world and provide input on position and research papers related to Indigenous education and skills development, and
  • Identify recommendations to the WFCP membership on how to advance Indigenous education in PTET, provide guidance for the development of Indigenous education events and meetings, and promote the role of PTET in Indigenous education.
The Indigenous Education Affinity Group will be comprised of leaders and members of PTET that have in place Indigenization strategies and systems or would like to establish them and learn from others who have more expertise in the field.

If you are interested in joining the group and helping shape its mandate, email Kory Wilson at kory_wilson@bcit.ca with IEAG in the subject line. Please include (1) a brief introduction, (2) your current position, (3) your nation (if you are Indigenous) and (4) what you think this Affinity Groups can do. Join the SDG Affinity Group's second Meeting, Focused on the SDG Accord

Please join us for the second Affinity Group meeting taking place March 23rd, 2021 at 12 PM EST, 4 PM UCT.

This month’s meeting will focus on The SDG Accord with a presentation from Teodora Axente, the Communications and Membership Officer with EAUC – The Alliance for Sustainability in Education.  The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) exists to lead and empower the post-16 education sector to make sustainability 'just good business' and believe that education is at the heart of global sustainability. In doing so, EAUC is at the heart of a range of global initiatives, most recently and notably The SDG Accord, the Global Climate Letter and the well-established International Green Gown Awards.

Learn more about the SDG Accord and the role it has in inspiring, celebrating and advancing the critical role that education has in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how your institution could benefit from becoming a signatory.

Breakout room discussions will again follow the presentation to allow for meaningful conversations and sharing opportunities.

Continued engagement and discussion after the meeting will occur in the UNESCO-UNEVOC TVET Forum.

We encourage you to submit any questions you have for Teodora and the SDG Accord before the event to this email: impact@collegesinstitutes.ca.
