Welcome to Walk & Talk, my monthly newsletter to share stories, inspiration, and hope. I’m Kim Knowle-Zeller, mama, pastor, and writer. I’ve lived in West Africa and one summer hiked 500 miles across Spain, and now I call Cole Camp, MO home with my husband, two children, and dog. I love to walk, talk, and share stories. Thanks for being here!

Dear friends,

This past month my son, Isaac, received a new bed. It was time for him to move out of his crib and into a big boy bed. We’ve had some short nights, lots of trips to the bathroom, and a few thumps as he’s fallen to the floor. One morning at 4 am (I’m not sure this even counts as morning) I hear Isaac talking to himself. I find him awake and alert playing with his stuffed animals and blankets. “I’m playing library, mommy. My workers are busy.”

Even at 4 am, it’s hard not to smile at his imagination. “I know buddy, but it’s still time for sleep.”

“But I’m not tired.” He tells me.

I’m determined to get a few more hours of sleep, so I hop in his bed and tell him to come sleep with me. We lay together for a few minutes, he keeps telling me about his library and workers and what needs to get done, he also repeats that he’s not tired. Finally, as he rubs his eyes, he tells me, “Leave.”

The next morning over breakfast, I ask Isaac why he got up so early. He lifts his arms up and with exasperation says, “The sun is taking so long to come up.”

I know what he means.

Perhaps you do, too.

Maybe you’re waiting for the chance to safely see your family and give a hug. Maybe you’re looking forward to being in person again for worship. Maybe you’re excited for the day your kids will be back in school. Maybe you simply want a break, or relief, or a moment alone. Maybe you’re wondering how your mental health will survive more tension and uncertainty.

“The sun is taking so long to come up.”

It feels like the sun may never come up. And if it does, we wonder if we’ll have the strength to see it.

As we enter a new month, I invite you to sit with your feelings. The waiting. The lament. Let them wash over you. It’s holy and necessary. It’s a faithful response to this world and our place in it. It allows us to know the power of light once we’ve settled in the darkness.

Maybe for you in this darkness you’re like Isaac and inviting someone to be with you. Maybe you feel even more lonely. Wherever you are, however you feel, you’re not alone. God is with you. God is holding you. God is sitting with you in the darkness.

God is bringing forth the light.

By the tender mercy of our God,
the dawn from on high will break upon us,
to give light to those who sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace

(Luke 1:78 NRSV).

My Favorite Things

Last month, my friend Erin and I created an 8-day email devotional, Abundant Love. Each morning we sent a little love note containing a Bible verse, reflection, questions for pondering and a spiritual practice to try. It’s been our hope from the beginning that the devotionals would remind readers of God’s unconditional love, and God’s call to share that love with others. If you missed the devotional the first time, you can access all the devotionals here.

"Lent teaches us to hold postures of hope in the face of despair. Lent, I believe, calls to us to keep moving forward and saying together, We have to go through it. When we reach the final days of Lent, we are met not by what we’ve done or accomplished but rather by the work God has done on the cross. Lent shows us through the cross that death doesn’t have the final word.” Read more for simple practices you can do this Lent from my latest for Living Lutheran.

"This month, take time to sing together over a meal, during playtime or before bed. Worry less about perfect pitch and more about forming a habit your kids will love. Be inspired by the knowledge that to sing our faith is to connect with the God who first sang us into creation.” Read more from my latest Growing Together column from Living Lutheran.

What’ I’m reading: Kristin Hannah’s newest book, The Four Winds, is breathtaking and heart wrenching. It’s opened my eyes to a period in history known as the Dust Bowl that I knew little about.

I also devoured 12 Tiny Things: Simple Ways to Live a More Intentional Life by Heidi Barr and Ellie Roscher. The premise of the book is that there are tiny things we can do throughout our days that can open up growth and renewal. One practice I’ve incorporated into my days is simply going outside for a few moments and looking up. Sounds simple, right? But it makes a difference and helps reframe my days.

For Lent this year our family is marking the season learning about the different names of God thanks to Little Great Design Co’s Lenten Paper Chain and Devotional Cards. Over dinner, we read from our Spark Storybook bible, learn a name for God, and say a prayer. Simple, but meaningful.

I’m excited to be starting a very part time job with the Exhale online community through Coffee + Crumbs. Exhale is an online community of women pursuing creativity alongside motherhood, for the enrichment of both experiences. I’m their new community engagement manager so I get to do my favorite things: encourage and support others in their creativity and mothering.

Are you in a cooking rut? My go-to winter recipe is this cauliflower curry from Pinch of Yum. It’s so easy to make in your instant pot and it’s devoured by everyone in our home. Which is no small feat!
Thank you for reading! As we move through March, know I’m giving thanks for you. We’re approaching one year on pandemic life. I hold space for you and continue to lean into hope for the days to come.

Peace be with you.
