Government £30 Million Waking Watch Relief
On the 17th December 2020, the government announced a £30 million fund to help end the scandal of excessive waking watch costs, as part of a further move to support thousands of residents in high-rise buildings.
The new Waking Watch Relief Fund will pay for the installation of fire alarm systems in high-rise buildings with cladding, removing or reducing the need for costly interim safety measures such as ‘waking watch’. The National Fire Chiefs Council have been clear in recent guidance that building owners should move to install common fire alarm systems as quickly as possible to reduce or remove dependence on waking watches.
So, how does this relate to QDOS Fire Safety Drawings?
The Grenfell Tower Phase 1 Report held a statement from Station Manager Gareth Cook (2017) about how a Premises Information Plate would the fire brigade would conduct familiarisation visits” for high rise buildings", mentioning vital information such as; anomalies of the building, how many people live in the building, if all the flats are the same etc. In his statement discussing the Premises Information Plate, he mentioned how he, "did not recall seeing one at Grenfell Tower.” You can read his statement here.
This is where QDOS were quick to act.
Many companies had developed their own version of Premises Information Plates, however Scotland and The London Fire Brigade were the first to use the colour yellow for the plates. The information is digitally anoprinted onto 2mm aluminium measuring 600mm x 600mm, which is displayed externally on high rise buildings for the assistance of the attending fire and rescue services. The bright yellow colour and vandalism resistant aluminium makes the plate clearly visible and easy to read.
