Hampton virus deaths top 100 

The Virginia Department of Health said that 103 people have died in Hampton because of covid-19, with four new deaths reported today. The state began keeping records on the coronavirus, including the number of cases, deaths, and hospitalizations, in March of 2020. The first deaths were reported in April of 2020.

Hampton reported 26 new cases today, for a total of 8,556 cases since the pandemic began, and a 7-day positivity rate  — the percentage of coronavirus tests where the results were positive  — of 15.4%.

Virginia reported 1,657 new cases today, for a total of 572,639 cases since the pandemic began, and a 7-day positivity rate of 7.8% .

Officials urge residents to continue practicing social distancing, wearing masks and washing their hands regularly to avoid spreading covid-19. You can get more information on cases, the latest testing results, and the covid-19 vaccine by visiting the Virginia Department of Health website.
 

Advice, ideas for home-based businesses

Advice and ideas targeting home-based businesses will be offered in a series of monthly free workshops starting March 10. The first workshop focuses on "Preparing your Home-based Business for the Post Pandemic World," with speaker Marc Wilson from the Hampton Roads Small Business Development Center.

Workshops will be held at 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month through September. In addition to a speaker, sessions will feature virtual networking and a question-and-answer time.

The series is sponsored by Hampton's Economic Development Department, along with the governments of Newport News, Williamsburg, Poquoson, York, James City and Gloucester. Register once to attend all seven sessions.


Youth violence prevention mini-grants

It's not too late! Since 2012, Youth Violence Prevention Mini-Grant funds have been available through the city for community-based, grassroots programs that help provide positive activities, services, and programs for youth in Hampton.

Eligible applicants include grassroots organizations, community-based organizations, and neighborhood groups. The program is not open to local governmental agencies, schools, or fee-for-service-based businesses. Applicants who are awarded grant funds must comply with reporting expectations, including financial reports, progress reports, and a project completion report. 

You can go online to see the request for proposals and learn more about the program, which is sponsored by the city's Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities. The deadline for applications is midnight on March 2.
