Hi!

We hope everyone is doing well. In this newsletter, we'll give you a brief update of what we've been up to in the last month. Check out our new collections to get a quick visual overview of what has happened in the world (or, at least, what are cartoonists considered to be important). And if you want to support what we do, you can!

Historical cartoons

Illustration by James Gillray from 1802 about using cowpox to vaccinate against smallpox.
Take a close look at the cartoon to see what happens to the people after they receive a vaccination.

Here at Cartoon Movement, we are very interested in the history of cartoons, and the parallels between cartoons from a 100 years ago and now. If you share this interest, we recommend you read this article in Nature about how cartoons reflected on scientific progress in the 18th and 19th century, and this article published by JSTOR Daily about how a cartoonist incited violence with his work in 1898.

10 cartoons for social justice

Cartoon by  Kürşat Zaman

If modern cartoons are more your thing, do check out these 10 cartoons about social justice. The coronavirus pandemic has further accelerated the growth of the gap between rich and poor. The poor not only lack money, they often also lack job security, work safety and access to healthcare.

Three comics journalism stories

We published three more comics in our series on public authority in Africa, produced in partnership with the London School Economics.

A poisoning in Palabek, about an old woman accused of witchcraft in a refugee camp in northern Uganda. Read the full comic here.

Hazard pay, about the informal economy in Sierra Leone during the Ebola crisis. Read the full comic here.

It's who you know, about two women of different social status in a small town in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Read the full comic here.
