Issue 60
It's hard to believe, but this month marks one year that Orlando Modern Quilt Guild has been an all-virtual organization. It hasn't been ideal, but I'm so glad that we've been able to maintain connection and enjoy some fun and learning along the way. We even had a very successful and memorable virtual retreat!
And finally, there is good news ahead, as more and more of us are able to get vaccinated. We just completed our re-enrollment process--and picked up TEN new members along the way. We look forward to welcoming those new members on Zoom at our April meeting but we'd REALLY like to meet them in person......so in May we are going to do just that! We will be meeting LIVE on May 5 at 10 am at Maitland Community Park, 1400 Mayo Ave, in Pavilion #2.
This will be one of our "non-business" meetings and will be a chance for us to reconnect, and meet our new members. We will also have a live show and tell (limited to two items per member.) Bring a snack to share (or not) and water--it will be warm! This is a covered open air pavilion with ceiling fans. There are picnic tables, but you are welcome to bring your own chairs if you prefer. We will be following CDC guidelines for safe assembly so masks and appropriate social distancing will be required, even if you are fully vaccinated. This will NOT be a live Zoom event, but we will try to record at least portions of the meeting to post to our YouTube channel.
Going forward, we will be back to Zoom for our June and July meetings, as we have some wonderful lectures/trunk shows scheduled for both those months. After that, we will work with the Sewing Studio on assessing when we can safely resume our meetings there--we'll keep you updated! Looking forward to seeing you all--virtually this month and in person next month!

Exchange Day is the 3rd Monday of the month
Upcoming Sewing Studio Exchange Day -
April 19, 2021
The exchange days have been a great success! They are a great way to safely say hello to fellow members .... almost like a mini-meeting. These exchange days are helping us get needed items distibuted until we are able to meet in person to exchange outreach items, supplies ,
library books , etc.
Please let me know if you need me to collect or distribute something for you. I am in the Sewing Studio parking lot from 10:00 am -11:00 am each exchange day.
Leslie Gale is collecting batting scraps, piecing them together and cutting them into placemat size. Come by and grab a few to make placemats for Seniors First Meals on Wheels program clients.
It’s a great way to use up scraps!
I also have guild labels for the charity quilts that you make.
See you at the Sewing Studio on Exchange Day !

SUMMIT BABY QUILT PROJECT FINAL REPORT
(Total quilt count- 100)
The last of the baby quilts were delivered on March 25th. A video of the quilts will be shown at the April Zoom meeting. Special thanks to the amazing mother-daughter team Sharleen Jespersen and Sarah Lauzon for coordinating this project and producing the video! The following is a summary of the presentation.
Pastor Abbott reported that each of the quilts was presented to a foster child who they create a Care Team around. Each Care Team Leader was able to choose a quilt for the child who's home they were going to visit and that quilt was given to the child. Another really wonderful thing happened. The Commission 127 provides the frame work for this Care Team model.
They were doing an event at Christmas and they were giving packages to children in foster care, not just at Summit but anywhere in central Florida. Some of our quilts were shared with them and so they went even beyond this specific ministry. Pastor Abbott marveled at the beauty and individuality of each quilt and at the kindness and generosity of our quilt guild.

NEW YEAR, NEW PROJECTS
We are continuing with some small, one person projects until we are able to meet in groups to work on larger team projects. Please see the links below for instructions and information sheets for each of the projects.
Two of the ideas are for the Winnie Palmer NICU. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Winnie Palmer serves over 1,400 pre-mature babies every year.
1. They are in need of Incubator Covers (quilts measuring approx. 48” x 66”) in order to help the babies learn the difference between day and night. The bright lights of the NICU make this difficult. These covers will be sent home with each child as they are discharged from the NICU.
2. The other project for Winnie Palmer are called Taggies.
A Taggie is a small (14 “x 14”) square of flannel with ribbon tabs on three sides. The Taggie is to help familiarize the baby with the parents’ scent. These two projects are very specific with certain design limitations, please follow the instructions carefully. We will try to have a sample of the Taggie at the April and/or May meeting.
3. Pillowcases for the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. The OURM provides transitional housing for persons facing homelessness. The mission has a need for bedding and we would like to provide pillowcases.
If you have any questions about the projects , please contact Sue Kenard , skenard@outlook.com
