Infrastructure News

Tēnā koutou

We acknowledge that last night’s announcement that the alert levels have changed for Auckland (Alert level 3) and the rest of the country (Alert level 2) may be unsettling, in particular for those in Auckland.

It is important that work continues with everyone’s health and safety as a top priority. At alert levels 2 and 3 all school construction projects can continue as long as the COVID-19 Construction Protocols for site entry, site operations, and leaving site are being adhered to.

As a client, we have a significant role to play in ensuring these standards and protocols are taken into account for all work undertaken. We expect everyone running construction sites on behalf of the Ministry or schools to apply the guidance provided in the document New Zealand COVID-19 Construction Protocols and that each business has a COVID Response Plan in place.

The protocols document is a comprehensive and easy to read document that provides further guidance and resources to explain what good practice looks like while COVID-19 transmission is still a risk. You can download a copy on the CHASNZ website.

We have also confirmed that the current public health order does not consider construction workers working on school projects as ‘permitted workers’ for travel from Auckland to neighbouring regions or vice versa. Any workers on school projects needing to cross an Auckland border must be in possession of a valid exemption. You can find out more on MBIE’s website.

If you are a main contractor on a Ministry of Education-led project, your Delivery Manager will be in touch to confirm that you have all the appropriate protocols in place.

If you are a project manager on a school-led project, please contact your school property advisor to confirm that you have the appropriate protocols in place that the COVID-19 response plan is being adhered to.

Clear and open communication between parties is as important as ever to maintain the pillars of health and safety. If you have any questions please contact your relevant Ministry contact in the first instance or email EIS.HealthandSafety@education.govt.nz.

We continue to monitor the alert levels and will provide further updates if any changes are required.
