Rain

One of the big adjustments I am making is the transition from living in a near desert environment, where we got between 5 and 10 inches of rain a year, to learning what it means to receive 140 inches of rain a year! Over the weekend, we had 8.2 inches of rain in a single day, which equates to over 600,000 gallons of water on our 3 acre property!!!!

February Blog Recap

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, we are working hard to renovate and create a cozy space in our new-to-us 512 square foot cottage. One of the challenges of a smaller space is making sure that everything has its place and that the overall effect leaves it feeling as large and open as possible. So here's a small space tip for nesting a large ironing table!
Over the years, I’ve learned a handful of tips that have added up to having a lot more success and confidence when piecing flying geese blocks using the no-waste method. I put all of my current top tips and best practices together into a blog post in case there is something new here that will help you: No-Waste Flying Geese Tutorial & Top Tips.
It’s time to get a group quilt project moving, so I’ve made my first grouping of blocks. I'm really looking forward to seeing what others make so that I can be inspired to make another batch for consideration. Group Quilt Blocks 1-4.
In preparing workshops for QuiltCon Together, I made several class samples that I finally had an opportunity to share about: QuiltCon Together Workshop Samples.
QuiltCon Together has come and gone, and above is a behind the scenes look at how I virtually connected with workshop attendees throughout the event. I'm hopeful for an in person QuiltCon in Phoenix in 2022, but I have a lot of questions about how that might look and feel. For more of my musings and behind the scenes glimpses, I put together a full QuiltCon Together recap post.

Old School Block of the Month

I am squeaked in right under the wire to get my first block made as part of the 2021 Old School Block of the Month. Kim shared her tutorial for the Patched Friendship Star block on January 12th. I need to get busy and finish the next block, the Variable Star block with an autograph variation shared by Nancy from Masterpiece Quilting.

Are you sewing along?

Quilter Spotlight: Tighe Flanagan (@tigheflanagan)

The last thing I did before the world locked down last year was attend QuiltCon 2020 in Austin, TX, and I had the pleasure of spending time with Tighe in the workshops area (I was one of the crew running the workshops and Tighe was a volunteer helping us out). I can attest to his attention to detail in his garments, and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the projects that he created this past year, especially “When Life Gives You Lemons”, one of the two quilts he had juried into QuiltCon Together.

Tighe has a background in visual arts and Middle Eastern studies and loves to combine these passions through patchwork and quilting. His creative work is greatly influenced by a sense of place — those he has visited and researched as well as his home in Washington, DC. In addition to quilting and patchwork, Tighe enjoys sewing menswear and teaching others new skills and techniques.

Tighe is planning on releasing a few more patterns this year and exploring recorded teaching content, time permitting.

For more about Tighe, check out his recent interview/chat with Curated Quilts, visit him on Instagram (@tightflanagan) or his website.

Quilting Jetgirl Designs - Made By You

Sarah @quiltnsew took my Thread Painting workshop during QuiltCon Together, and I love the way her first thread painting mini quilt came together!

Want to see your version of one of my patterns featured in an upcoming newsletter? Be sure to tag me (#quiltingjetgirl) and use the hashtag for your quilt finish on social media or send me an email with a photo and description of your finish to yvonne@quiltingjetgirl.com!
February feels like it went by in the blink of an eye! I have a lot of goals for sewing in March, so hopefully I can start to translate my efforts into progress and finishes.

What are you working on this month?
