It is a sad anniversary we are reaching this month. I clearly remember the emergency board meeting we held at the Rosendale Café to decide about closing the library as the state and library system simultaneously shut down. That was our last in-person meeting. We are all getting better at using online meetings and enjoying online learning opportunities that we might not have participated in before. We will continue to provide virtual programs in March, April, and May that we hope will offer something for everyone.
According to the CDC, 40% of adults have struggled with mental health or substance use during the pandemic. On Tuesday, March 9, at 7:00 p.m., a representative from the Mental Health Association of Ulster County will provide an overview of the resources available to Ulster County residents to help with substance use and mental health in a virtual presentation. We are excited to announce the library has been awarded a grant from Humanities New York to hold a weekly reading and discussion group in April and May. The theme of the discussion is American Politics and Community Today. The texts, which will be supplied by the Humanities Council, include political theorists Hannah Arendt, Danielle Allen, and essays by Ralph Ellison. These texts will help us explore the divide we currently see in our communities over politics. The sessions will be led by SUNY New Paltz political science professor and Rosendale resident, Jeff Miller. We will send out specifics about this program soon.
March 16 we will host a reading of the new book: Flipping the Bird: an anthology of short stories, essays and plays by Rosendale’s Margarita Meyendorff (Mourka). Sign up on the website.
We will offer a local history program on March 29: Historian Susan Stessin-Cohn will talk about slavery in this area from her book: In Defiance: Runaways from Slavery in New York’s Hudson River Valley, 1735-1831. Registration will be available on our website soon.
Many people have asked about tax forms. We only received forms from the state this year. We will print out federal forms on demand for patrons. If you want to file your taxes on-line, SUNY New Paltz School of Business is offering free assistance for filing online for individuals with a gross income of less than $66,000.
If you would like to do some free and fun writing in the company of others, consider joining us on Tuesday mornings for writing practice. This will be held for two more Tuesdays, March 2 and March 9. Sign up on the library’s website.
We are in the process of hiring a new librarian to help us create dynamic, responsive library programs for people of all ages, and to help expand our collection of materials to meet the many tastes and needs of Rosendale residents. They will introduce themselves in next month’s newsletter.

Every Spring the Friends of the Rosendale Library give scholarships to graduating high school seniors. The money is to be used for college expenses, books, etc. Students from Rondout Valley, Kingston and New Paltz high schools who live in the Rosendale Library district may apply.
Applications have been sent to the above high school guidance offices and to the Rosendale Youth Center. They are also available at the Rosendale Library desk.
The deadline for submissions is March 12. Please bring completed applications to the library or mail to:
