Assemblymember Medina To Be Honored,
Panel To Discuss Chávez’ Legacy

 

Moreno Valley College will hold its César E. Chávez Scholarship Ceremony on Tuesday, March 30, at 3 pm, virtually via webinar. Assemblymember Jose Medina will be honored with the César E. Chávez Legacy Award. To reserve a seat in the virtual webinar, click here.

Medina, a former Poly High School instructor and Riverside Community College District Board member, was elected to the California Assembly in November of 2012. As chair of the Committee on Higher Education, he has championed funds for the UC Riverside School of Medicine; secured financial support for the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art, Culture and Industry of the Riverside Art Museum; and championed policies that strengthen community college education and support for students.

Moreno Valley College Celebrates 30 Years of Educating Valley Residents

 

Moreno Valley College, the 111th community college in California, will mark its 30th anniversary as an institutional campus on March 16. The Robert P. Warmington Company donated 112 acres for the creation of the Moreno Valley Campus, and another 20 acres were purchased. On October 13, 1989 groundbreaking for Phase I of the Moreno Valley Campus was held. Less than two years later, on March 13, 1991, official grand opening of the Moreno Valley Campus was held. The Moreno Valley Campus consisted of 132 acres; 39,789 assigned square feet of buildings, designated to serve 2,400 students. Its’ initial enrollment was 148 students in the spring of 1991, increasing to 3,800 students in fall of 1994. That first initial spring semester in 1991 only 12-week short-classes were offered with nine full-time faculty holding down the campus. The campus transition to a fully accredited community college in 2010.

President Signs Entrepreneurship Pledge

 

Robin Steinback, Ph.D., president of Moreno Valley College, signed the Presidents for Entrepreneurship Pledge earlier this month. 
 
More than 200 community colleges throughout the country have signed the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) pledge, committing to a role in stimulating economic development in their respective communities. By signing the pledge, presidents agree to take five action steps that will increase focus on entrepreneurship and college impact on the economic well-being of the communities they serve.

Military Friendly® Awards College a Silver Ranking

 

Moreno Valley College received a Silver standing from Military Friendly in its annual Military Friendly® School designation report for 2021-22. Institutions were evaluated through public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. Over 1,200 schools participated in the survey with around 750 schools earning a designation after reviewing institutions’ practices, outcomes and effective programs.
 
The Military Friendly ratings program began in 2003 as an advocacy vehicle to encourage civilian organizations to invest in programs to recruit, retain and advance Veterans as employees, entrepreneurs and students. 


Bennett Named Director of Health Services

 

Tracy Bennett, who has over 20 years nursing experience with progressive advancement of management, supervisory and leadership responsibilities, has been selected as director of Health Services. A RN, Bennett had previously been working in the private medical sector. 
 
A former community college student, Bennett attended both San Bernardino Valley College and Riverside City College, eventually earning an associate degree in nursing from the University of New York, Albany, and a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Phoenix.

College Develops a Community of Practice to Spur Innovation in the Classroom

 

Moreno Valley College has partnered with the nonprofit organization Maker Ed to build and incorporate hands-on, experiential, and learner driven practices into faculty instruction to support learners with the content they are teaching. 
 
Community of Practice was implemented at MVC for the 2020-21 academic year in order to allow participants to explore, learn, and plan with other educators using different approaches regarding maker education. The virtual COMMP community meets monthly, creating multi-day professional development workshops for the 2021 winter, spring and summer terms.

Journalism Instructor Looks to Write a New Chapter in the Educational Landscape

 

One day, Edward Rice, Ed.D., hopes to see others who mirror him standing in front of a classroom. At the K-12 level just two percent of educators are African American males. At the university level only five percent of full-time faculty members are black in the United States.
 
A journalism instructor at Moreno Valley College, Rice participated in the Best Men Teach Project: Black Excellence in Scholarship and Teaching (Project BEST). A partnership between the Kern High School District and California State University, Bakersfield, the symposium convenes faculty from 23 CSU campuses in order to engage with nationally-recognized leaders in higher education. In just its second year, Project BEST hopes to inspire Black and Latinx male high school juniors and seniors to consider a career in education.

Emergency Medical Services Program Presents First Aid Kits to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department

 

Moreno Valley College’s Emergency Medical Services program presented 25 first aid kits to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, with another 10 scheduled for delivery by the end of this month. Sherriff Chad Bianco accepted the kits on behalf of the department in a small ceremony at the Ben Clark Training Center. 
 
The first aid kits were assembled by the EMS students as part of a community service project over the last year, which was slowed by COVID restrictions. The first aid kits are to be provided to officers who are trained in emergency medical services.
