As an extension of last week’s Your 4 Walls installment on downsizing and streamlining for small spaces, this week Dwayne shares how to make even the most compact spaces stimulating and purposeful. Sometimes it’s those intimate nooks throughout our homes that hold the most character and make a lasting impact. Dwayne creates the place his clients want to be – whether it’s to snuggle up with a book, enjoy a morning coffee, or take a rejuvenating breathe – using a multi-sensory approach.
In any room, no matter the size, color is one of the most important elements to consider. While we all have favorite colors, there is also a real science behind color selection. Blues tend to give off a sense of calm, while orange and yellow can be energizing. Another important factor is tone, think pastels compared to vibrant hues. Depending on the mood you are going for, color makes a big difference. When designing a cozy study escape, a rich deep or dusty color will enhance the warmth of the inviting space. If you are seeking to make a small room feel larger, stick to lighter color that make the room feel airy. A trick of the trade is to apply your color to the walls, but paint the ceiling a bright white that will make the ceiling feel higher and the overall space seem larger.
In addition to color and light, texture is one of the greatest tools in a designer’s box. In small spaces, layering complimentary textures can add visual interest and carry the eye throughout the room giving the illusion of more space. When designing a small room dedicated to giving off a calming energy, consider a monochromatic palette. Soft, like-tones in varying dimensions makes a small space feel larger and more uniform while not sacrificing character. Texture can be achieved through textiles or even the placement of accessories to create a sense of perspective, for example consider a pillow and throw blanket as being in the foreground cascading over an armchair as the backdrop. In other words, the cherry on top that makes your portion-controlled sundae all the more enticing.
Small spaces in your home are an opportunity to have fun! Go big with oversized, floor to ceiling art to make your jewel box of a room have a big impact. Bold, bright works on crisp white walls define a space and add a “wow factor” to any setting. While the most used, larger spaces in your home should reflect the overall lifestyle of the family, it’s the smaller private spaces that are the most fun design challenges for Dwayne and team.
