“My own journey began in 1962”
From the Preface, In Search of Churchill
25 November 1993
570 words/2 ½ minute read
This book traces some of my travels and discoveries in search of Churchill since 1962. The process of finding out about any historical character can be a surprising one. All biographers who embark on the search find themselves caught up in many adventures and are continually amazed by the diverse ways in which they reach their goal of understanding. In this book I share some of my experiences in the hope that they may be of interest or amusement, and that something further will emerge from them of the character, struggles and achievements of Churchill himself. “as a man might woo a maid”
775 words/3 ½ minute read

75th anniversary of the “Iron Curtain Speech”
5 March 1946
Churchill at Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri
Martin's intro to the speech
Churchill, Power of Words
In the immediate aftermath of the war, Churchill contemplated with alarm a Europe divided between East and West, by what he called an “Iron Curtain”. The dominance of the Soviet Union and of Communism in Eastern Europe was his overriding concern in the international sphere. He expressed his fears and also his hopes, when he spoke, at the request of President Harry S. Truman, at Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri, on 5 March 1946. He gave his speech the title “The Sinews of Peace.”
