PRAYER WALKING

Have you ever gone on a prayer walk?  I don’t mean praying while you take a stroll, letting your thoughts roam freely between you and God. I mean an intentional walk with an intentional purpose. I have participated in two different kinds of prayer walks.

The first was a prayer walk for the community. Sponsored by a group of inner-city churches, we walked a few blocks, with a clergy member pausing for prayer every few houses. Prayers were offered for the residents of the neighborhood, the businesses, and all those whose lives were touched by those living there. It was very powerful, and people who resided there seemed very appreciative.

The second kind of prayer walk was a defined exercise, held in a retreat setting. There, we traveled through about eight stations. At each station there were instructions about what kind of prayer to offer, and some tangible exercise to help us reflect on that type of prayer.  One place had us pray for those closest to us, while picking up small ribbons to make a pin to wear as a reminder. Another encouraged us to come to God as a child, and had bubbles and toys to play with. It was amazing to see how each station elicited a response from each of us.

Emile encouraged us to be more intentional in our prayer practice, especially during Lent. He recommended we pray with each other. Nancy wrote a beautiful devotion about how her friends have prayed her through some tough times. Rachel and the youth are building a prayer mural for us to share this season. Perhaps, this year, we can focus on prayer during Lent. I admit that last year’s Lenten season was derailed by the onset of pandemic pandemonium. This year, though, we know we have the time and space to pray.

For some of us, praying out loud in front of someone is a scary thought. We can pray privately just fine, but praying out loud for another is a different story. I am no expert, but have found that, with practice, it’s easier. I think we worry too much that we will say the wrong thing. If our heart is sincere and we are open to God’s leading, I think we are ok.

The Ash Wednesday devotion in our booklet provided by WPPC has these words written by Henri Nouwen: Prayer takes place where heart speaks to heart, that is, here the heart of God is united with the heart that prays. Thus knowing God becomes loving God, just as being known by God is being loved by God. How can we go wrong when we let our heart speak to God and to another’s heart?

This Lent, I encourage each of us to do our own Prayer Walk. That may be virtual, due to pandemic and/or health restrictions. If you would like to go for a walk, need prayer, or want to pray with someone, just reach out.  If you would like to walk and pray, I’m available. We are all in God’s family. We are all in this together.

Scripture: Here are some verses to remind us about prayer.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NRSV
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 John 5:14-15 NRSV
And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him.

1 Chronicles 16:11 NRSV
Seek the Lord and his strength,   seek his presence continually.

Ephesians 6:18 NRSV
Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.

"God Be With Your Till We Meet Again"  WPPC Virtual Ukulele Choir Project

You don't have to be a member of our Ukulele Choir or Chancel Choir to participate!  Just record yourself singing!  All are welcome!

How to participate (do it yourself directions):

1.  Watch and listen to this video of Ed signing:
"God Be You Till We Meet Again"
Practice Track for Virtual Ukulele Choir Project
Due Wednesday, March 3rd
2.   Download the music:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/11kijT8w7DP294CriFCt83Y42b7mRSUKP/view?usp=sharing

3.  Make a recording of you singing this song in sync with Ed

To record in sync with Ed you will need two devices:
  1. One phone, tablet, or computer to listen to the song video as you play along
  2. and a second camera/phone/tablet to record the video of you singing.
(PLEASE wear headphones while recording.  This makes it much more likely that you will be in sync and makes the editing process easier.)

4.  Then share the file with Emile by Google Drive, Drop Box or another file-sharing service.  (The video will be too large to text or e-mail.  If you need help, please ask!)

The deadline to send me a video will be Wednesday March 3rd at 5pm.   After that I will begin editing the video together - and it is really difficult add a late video after I've begun work.

5.  Call or text Emile to make sure I got the video.  (Sometimes file transfers don't work the first time - especially if you've not sent a file to me before.  I REALLY don't want to accidentally leave out someone who recorded a song!)

If you need help with any part of this process, please contact me - I would love for you to be involved!

Thank you all!  The more voices the better!
