Storytime in our Community is a series of storytimes that take place at various locations throughout Jamestown and nearby towns. These virtual storytimes are available on Facebook Live.

We are excited to announce that the Library Science Kits purchased with a grant from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation are ready for circulation. Every Tuesday at 2:00 pm, you can view a video on Facebook highlighting a different kit and how to use it. You can also view the videos on the library's YouTube channel.
All science kits meet various Next Generation Science Standards and bring the library's Makerspace into the community. The newest kits available are green energy, optics, mechanics 2.0, and ion compound building games geared toward middle and high school students.

This spring, the library holds the first annual Prendergast Poetry Project, open to students in grades K-8 in the Jamestown area.
For the contest, we ask that students write poems on community and the importance of working together. The contest's goal is to allow students to reflect creatively on the theme of community and how they experience community in their lives. What does community mean to them? What brings them together with others? How might young people help to create a stronger community? Community collaboration is especially significant after the unprecedented year we have had! Submissions must include the student's name, grade, school, and parent name and contact information.
All participants will receive a certificate and a free book. The poems will also be published in an online chapbook available to students, their families, and the community. Three students (one from K-2, one from 3-5, and one from 6-8) will be chosen as overall winners and will receive special recognition as well as a gift certificate to the local independent bookstore, Off the Beaten Path.

Blast from the Past!
This photo is of the Prendergast Monument and gravesite in Lake View Cemetery. Lake View Cemetery opened in 1858 when Jamestown outgrew the original burial ground, which was located at the current site of the James Prendergast Library. Begun with 37.5 acres, the property has grown to over 150. There are more than 43,000 burial sites in the cemetery. Notable burials include Lucille Ball, Reuben Eaton Fenton (NY Congressman, Senator, and Governor), Catherine Harris (local leader of the Underground Railroad), and James Prendergast (grandson of Jamestown’s founder).

Keeping Each Other Warm Clothesline!
The Prendergast Library is partnering with Keeping Each Other Warm in Jamestown, NY, to place a clothesline outside of the library's Cherry Street entrance. We have a drop-off box in the library.
Accepted items for donation include:
Adult and Child hats, earmuffs/earbands, mittens/gloves, scarves, and socks.
PLEASE NOTE: we will only accepting ℕ𝔼𝕎 store-bought or handmade items due to COVID precautions.
Thanks to a donation from the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County, face masks are now available on the clothesline outside of the library.

Crochet Craft Kits
March is National Crafting Month. To celebrate, we will highlight a different craft each week. For this first week, we are highlighting Crochet!
On Thursday, March 4, 2021, and until supplies are gone, pick up a "learn to crochet kit" consisting of enough yarn to make two small granny square coasters or a crochet chain bracelet as well as a crochet hook.
