 2021-22 Upper School Course Report from Mrs. Bolton
One of the things I love about school is that you get to make improvements every year. One of our faculty’s past mottos was “Never Stop Improving”. The academic standard at The Academy has always been high. As our school grows, we are able to offer more choices for our students to pursue their interests and develop their God-given gifts and talents.
*Thank you for your feedback in the Parent Survey we sent out earlier this year. It gave us helpful information about what you and your students need. Here are some highlights for the 2021-22 school year.
Advanced Placement Courses
We will begin offering AP US History and AP Chemistry as part of our curriculum next year. Our teachers are excited to attend the summer training that will prepare them to teach these courses. Our students are ready for AP US History because of the strong foundation they have in Language Arts. AP Chemistry will prepare students for college coursework in Science, Medicine, Engineering and more. AP courses are very rigorous. We believe in our students at The Academy and never want to underestimate what they can do!
Senior Internships
We designed our Plan of Study to allow seniors to have semester long internships their senior year for 1-2 blocks. We are tailoring our electives to prepare students for these internships in fields such as Health Science, Engineering, Business/Law, Computer Science, and Education/Ministry.
Fine Arts
Our Fine Arts department continues to offer excellent courses to help students discover and develop their abilities and talents in band, music, art and drama. The Academy arts programs are an integral part of our school community. They bring us together and allow students to share their God-given gifts with others.
World Language
This year, we added French to our World Language offerings. Over the next couple of years, we will offer 3rd and 4th year language for students who want to pursue fluency in their language of choice.
Athletics
Athletes need time to train in order to build a successful athletic program. High school sports add a vital element to our school environment. Lessons learned on the field are often just as important as lessons learned off the field. An athletic period will still be offered the last “skinny” block of the day for certain sports.
Course Selection
Our 2021-22 Course Catalogue is now available! Over the next three weeks, I will be meeting with each high school student individually to discuss what courses are best for them (see the schedule here). Together, we will make a 4-year plan that will set them up for success. Parents will sign off on their course registration form before they turn it in. I encourage parents to set aside time for a conversation with your student at home about their choices.

Last Tuesday, all students and staff joined thousands around the world for ACSI’s Day of Prayer. Students prayed specific Scriptures and prayers with their homerooms, and the entire student body circled the campus for a moment of silence. Thank you parents, grandparents and Whitesburg Baptist Church staff for joining in these prayers. He is faithful; we are Warrior strong.

 "I nominate Mrs. Amanda Baldwin for her heart and kindness to our family. Our family recently moved to Alabama from Seattle. I was told by Mrs. Barker to go to the Facebook uniform exchange, and I immediately received a message there from Mrs. Baldwin. She was a wealth of knowledge, and what I admired and appreciated the most was the day before Nicolas's first day, I was telling her how uneasy he was feeling about starting a new school and not knowing anyone. Mrs. Baldwin messaged me, “Rebecca, I am a 3rd grade teacher at the Academy and I would love, with your permission, to bring my son and another boy in our neighborhood by to meet Nicolas.” Not only did she come in the freezing cold, she brought Grey, TJ and cookies! Amanda had a ton of information for me, and we had a wonderful visit for over an hour while the boys played! The fact that she thought of my son and his feelings, wanting to ease his anxiety as well as give my momma heart so much peace, was amazing! Her thoughtfulness made an immediate difference. My son was excited and thrilled to find TJ and Grey at school. The cookies...well, they were a bonus!" Rebecca Ballentine |

Lauren Olivia Denman is the daughter of Tim and Karen Denman. She has attended The Academy for twelve years. During her time at The Academy, she has been a member of the National Honor Society and has participated in all the opportunities of the Student Leadership University. She has played volleyball, tennis, and has been a shining member of the drama club in the school. After graduation, she plans on attending the University of Alabama.

Brennan Cole Paulus is the son of Craig and Lisa Paulus. He has attended The Academy for his four years of high school. During his time at The Academy, Brennan has been a member of the National Honor Society and has participated in soccer, football, and both indoor and outdoor track. Brennan has received $17,800 in scholarships to Samford and $15,000 in scholarships to Berry College. He is still undecided which he will attend after graduation.

Trevor Nicholas Thomas is the son of Anthony and Tonia Thomas. He has attended The Academy for nine years. During his time at The Academy, Trevor has participated in all the opportunities of the Student Leadership University and has been a member of the coding and engineering programs. He has received the Merit Tuition for Mississippi College where he will be attending after graduation.

Academy Parents, please mark your calendars for this very special event on March 25. We will hear exciting announcements about the future of Whitesburg Christian Academy. We will also enjoy a silent auction, a showcase of student art, live music from our band, a cheerleading performance, a live Lands' End fashion show and more. This will be a memorable evening for the Academy family, and we look forward to seeing you there!
*This event will take place in the newly renovated sanctuary of Whitesburg Baptist Church to accommodate social distancing. The program begins at 7pm. Doors open at 6:30pm for the silent auction. More details to come!

The Varsity and JV tennis teams have begun and are on a roll! The varsity boys have won all 5 matches this season with scores of 9-0 or 8-1, even against schools up to 6A classification, like Hazel Green, New Hope, and Westminster. The varsity girls have a 4 out of 6 record of wins beating the same high level teams as the boys. Many more wins to come for both teams. Go Warriors!
