No, really. How ARE you?
I used to ask this question at least twenty times a day. And you know what? I rarely got a real, honest answer.
Not because people are dishonest or uninterested in talking, but because "How are you?" and the answers, "good," "great," and "fine" have become automatic responses.
Years ago, I learned that to get actual answers, I needed to change the question.
"On a scale of 1-10, how are you doing today with everything going on?"
"How is it going working on this new project? What's been tricky about it?"
"You're working from home now. How are you feeling about managing everything? It's not easy."
As an authentic leader are you really interested in the answer? Are you taking the time to ask the right questions? Are you listening well so that your team feels they can share?
Show interest. Get specific. Take the time to listen.
Change the question.
