Welcome, March!

It's Lit on the Rail Trail

This weekend is the last weekend to experience I Heart Rail Trail: Lights, presented by US Bank. All six pieces have been created by local artists and curated by Hodges Taylor's Lauren Harkey.

While you enjoy the lights: Grab a free coffee or hot chocolate from Central Coffee Co. on Friday + Saturday from 5 - 6 pm, show what "Art You Heart" the most to Pepperbox Doughnuts on Sunday for a free donut, and enjoy a free rose from Bookout Blooms at the South End Farmers Market -  all sponsored by US Bank!

First Friday, Best Friday

The First Friday Gallery Crawl is back this Friday, March 5th, and five galleries in South End are excited to welcome you (and your masks) into their doors. Adventure from Hodges Taylor all the way to Gallery C3 at C3 Lab, and don't forget to make a few stops along the route to play with South End Interactive - all you need is a smart phone to scan a QR code, and you're all set for the perfect art filled evening in South End.

Space capacity limits, face masks, and distancing will be in force during this family-friendly gallery crawl. All of the deets are here.

#5 Plastics: Landfill No More!

Did you know that most of your plastic takeout containers are not actually recyclable? Nope. You may be putting them in the green bin, but unfortunately that's just likely to send your whole bin to the landfill. We have a better alternative: Bring them, cleaned, to the South End Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. We'll collect them so that Envision Charlotte can process them and turn them into PPE and new plastics. A win all around!

OK, so what do I do? Collect clean and sticker-free #5 takeout food containers and bring them to the South End Farmers Market each Saturday from 8am - 1pm, starting on March 13th. Until then, start collecting your stash. Envision Charlotte will take care of the rest!

Cool Things Happen Here

Mecklenburg County Park + Rec has started construction for  Wilmore Centennial Park, being built alongside The Square, by Beacon Partners. This park will sit at the intersection of Hawkins and Kingston and will boast a large open lawn, various seating areas, and versatile space perfect for fun gatherings, furry friends, and families. Wilmore Centennial Park aims to be the centerpiece of South End. Summer is quickly approaching and Mecklenburg County Park + Rec plan to hold the grand opening in the summer of 2021.

Extending your Run: Rail Trail Pedestrian Bridge Update
The Rail Trail Pedestrian Bridge will extend the existing Rail Trail and provide a critical connection between Uptown and South End. Construction is expected to start in mid-2022 and the be complete in 2024.

The Comprehensive 2040 Vision Plan is underway. Check out what's in store.
