DUG Network
March Urban Gardener Newsletter

Hello Gardeners!

If you're receiving this newsletter for the first time welcome!

We recently partnered with the amazing folks who manage Rooting DC, DC's Annual Urban Ag Festival, to increase the number of people receiving this free, solicitation-free, all volunteer managed, newsletter.

Rooting DC and DUG Network both share a common goal to promote, support and grow through building connections, the DC urban Ag movement.  Since Rooting DC only focuses on one amazing event a year, we decided to partner and continue Rooting DC's mission by combining our email lists for the DUG Newsletter to continue promoting, supporting and connecting people in the Urban Ag movement all year long.

Although its super easy to unsubscribe to this newsletter at anytime, please take a second to check it out first.   The DUG Network newsletter is a comprehensive list of workshops, events, programs, job openings, grants and gardening tips for the urban AG, food security and environmental world, happening in the greater DC area.

We send a newsletter out every two weeks, and 1-3 times a year (3 is our self imposed max) we highlight an urgent and important cause or program (never a solicitation).  We're very sensitive about not overloading anyone's inbox.  Also the DUG Network is managed by an all volunteer cooperative that does not try to profit in any way.

Check Out The DUG Network Resource Website

DUG Network also has an amazing website promoting over 500 different urban Ag, food security and environmental organizations and resources operating in the greater DC area.

Need Help Promoting an Event or Resource?

If you know of any garden, food and environmental events or opportunities that the community should know about, please email us the details (you can just respond to this e-mail) to include in the next newsletter.

Need Help Bringing this Newsletter Beyond the Computer

In addition, we need your help to bring awareness to all these amazing resources to all people in DC regardless if they have access to a computer or not.  We're looking for people or organizations that can help us print and post this newsletter so people without regular computer access can see these resources.  If you can help us print this newsletter and post it in any public place( libraries, community centers, coffee shops, barber shops, etc) please let us know.

Sovereign Earthworks Looking For Land to Farm in DC
Sovereign Earthworks is a cooperative/constellation of Trans, Queer, Two-Spirit, Gender-Expansive, Black & Indigenous Folx, rooted in our divine connection to Earth Mother and nourished by the medicine of our ancestors.  We are committed to building and imagining a future that centers food sovereignty, autonomous self liberation, and deep ancestral healing allowing us to reclaim our stories for the eighth generation.  We are looking for land within the city limits to grow ancestral heirloom varieties of crops for our community project. We are committed to feeding the most marginalized folx in our communities with nutritious food that is root in our ancestral connection to this land. Ideally we're looking for a space that can be cultivated over a couple growing seasons while we secure more permanent land within the city. The space would be large enough for us to continue to grow in traditional growing practices, but negotiable on size and space as we welcome opportunities.  See presentation for more info on Sovereign Earthworks

Angela Mahecha Adrar: The people who caused the climate crisis aren't the ones who will fix it (TED Talk)
Corporations and big business have wrecked the environment, but disadvantaged communities living in "sacrifice zones" -- urban areas heavily polluted and poisoned by industry -- are paying the price, says climate justice leader Angela Mahecha Adrar. Explaining why racial and economic justice must be at the center of climate action, she takes us to the frontline communities that are leading the world to clean, innovative and just climate solutions -- like Cooperativa Tierra y Libertad, a local farm co-op in Washington that's disrupting the multibillion-dollar berry business.

Take Action! DC Grassroots Planning Coalition
The DC Grassroots Planning Coalition hosts monthly gatherings consisting of people from every Ward citywide.  These gatherings are hosted usually every second Saturday of each month.  See our FB page for event updates. The Coalition has an organizing framework that relies on volunteers to connect with citywide Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, Civic/Citizen groups, community organizations, and neighborhood leaders. The Coalition asks groups and individuals sympathetic to our cause to actively strengthen the DC Comprehensive Plan and to defend our neighborhoods from the obvious and serious impacts of luxury over-development.
Petition to Save the DC Secret Garden
Recently, lawyers for the real estate mega-developer Douglas Jemal (who was just pardoned by former President Donald Trump) gave notice that The Secret Garden in Washington, D.C.'s Anacostia neighborhood had to go.  Representatives claimed that the 3,900 square foot community outdoor concert stage, beehive, and green space actually belonged to Mr. Jemal. But since 2010, our neighborhood businesses, including WEACT Radio, Check It Enterprises and the Go-Go Museum & Cafe, rescued the space that has been abandoned for decades. Our community transformed the space into a popular Anacostia landmark that hosts concerts, wakes, community meetings and pop-up shops. The garden is ours. This is not a fair fight.  We don't have Mr. Jemal's political connections, or his deep pockets for legal fees. Mr. Jemal got a pardon. The Garden deserves a pardon, too.  Please sign this petition to ask Mr. Jemal to do the right thing and let us keep what rightfully belongs to us. #PardontheGarden.

Justice for Black Farmers Act - Sign the Petition to reach 2000 Signatures!
Decades of farmer-led organizing combined with our heightened collective efforts over the last three years laid the groundwork for the Justice For Black Farmers Act of 2020. The Justice for Black Farmers Act is historic legislation that finally includes full debt cancellation, federal tax relief, and a foreclosure moratorium for our Black legacy farmers. Due to Congress being out of session today, the Act will be officially introduced by U.S. Senators Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, and Kirsten Gillibrand on November 30th.

Help Rescue Food for People In Need During COVID-19!
These are very challenging times for many, but one silver lining of all this is the many organizations and individuals who are working tirelessly to help those in need in their communities. Food assistance organizations are already facing higher demand for food. However, as restaurants close or alter their menus, events and catering orders are canceled, and offices are moving to 100% telework, there is a large amount of excess food that could be donated and needs to be placed with a food assistance organization very quickly. Food Rescue US- DC’s network of volunteers is ready to rescue that food and get it to the organizations who need it. Please, spread the word to restaurants, cafes, caterers, event spaces, offices, and any other businesses who may find themselves with excess food to donate that Food Rescue US - DC can rescue that food and make sure it gets to the right place. If you have food to donate or would like to volunteer to rescue food, you can:

Anti-Racism Training for Self-Directed Educators and Education Activists
Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 5 AM EST – 10 AM
  • Session 1 - Identities and Stories
10am-12pm - As practitioners supporting young people who are constructing their identities, this is an opportunity for us to look at our own identities. We’ll discuss where privileges afforded by these identities allow us to ignore the needs of others. We’ll also talk about discomfort we might feel when speaking about race, how we can start addressing the harm in our own mindsets and, briefly, what action can emerge from this discussion.
  • Session 2 - Communities Committed to Ending Racial Injustice - 1pm-3pm
This is an opportunity to think about how the settings you’re co-creating can address oppressive systems, name racism and focus on sharing power. We’ll talk about creating safe spaces for children, engaging with existing community work led by people in targeted social groups and considering access for Black, brown and diaspora families. By actively rejecting epistemic injustice against children, you are already doing important work in opening up communication with the young people you spend time with. Understanding how racist structures impact our interactions can help us to understand where more space needs to be made. The goal of this session is share practical ideas and leave with a solid starting point for further action.

Abolitionist Economics: Moving Beyond Carceral Capitalism
Monday, March 8, 2021 at 6 PM EST – 7:30 PM
This event will gather scholars and activists to share their knowledge and wisdom about the political economy of the carceral state and campaigns to redirect resources away from prisons and police and toward BIPOC communities. In response to the summer of unrest, a public conversation has been initiated that draws attention to local and federal funding imbalances that prioritize police, prisons, and security above education, housing, healthcare, climate justice, and welfare. What political tools are available to dismantle carceral capitalism? How can we move toward an economy that is abolitionist?

FoodCorps’ DC Metro Area program is recruiting both service member applicants AND service sites
Priority deadline for service member applicants is April 8th
To help lead the way in connecting kids to more nourishing food and food education in schools.  FoodCorps service members spend a year supporting hands-on learning, healthier school meetings, and contributing to a schoolwide culture of health by serving directly in schools. This year, I’m proud to share that our cohort of 13 amazing members helped manage on-site school food distribution, ensured that school gardens were maintained and that produce got to families and community members, and provided everything from grow-at-home lesson kits to online family cooking nights to support remote learning.

The markets are joyful community events, where families and children can mingle with volunteers and school administrators while selecting from fresh, seasonal produce and healthy pantry staples, totaling 23 pounds of food per enrolled student. In addition, our markets feature kids’ cooking activities, recipe samples, and chef-led culinary demonstrations, designed to get children excited about healthy eating and cooking. Finally, you can find more information about the impact of our JFM’s by watching this video.

DC’s First Food Runner Program "Food Rescue US"
One of the biggest barriers to donating food is transportation. Food Rescue, a national food rescue platform, is a FREE food runner app that coordinates volunteers to help transport food that would normally be thrown away (40% of all food ends of in the dump!) from a donor (restaurant, grocery, caterer, farmers market, event, etc.) to a place that feeds people in need. Food Rescue US is looking for volunteers, food donors, receiving organizations, and anyone who wants to lend a helping hand. Please email Kate Urbank, the DC Site Director, at kate@foodrescue.us with any ideas or questions and sign up at www.foodrescue.us to volunteer or receive more information.

Harvesting OverWintered Spinach in the Spring

By Love and Carrots

"Spinach is coming back to life after a long winter! We plant spinach through October, knowing that it will go dormant through the winter months, and then come back to life in the early spring. The sweetness and crunch of this spinach is outstanding  Be careful not to over harvest during this time, so your plant has time to recover!" loveandcarrots
