OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates (previously known as the Organization of Chinese Americans) is a non-profit organization founded in 1973, the mission of which is to advance the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States. It is headquartered in Washington, DC. The goals are to advocate for social justice, equal opportunity and fair treatment; promote civic participation, education, and leadership; advance coalitions and community building; and, foster cultural heritage. Originally created as a Chinese American organization, it now includes members from many Asian and non-Asian ethnicities.

We are looking to put together a recipe and history book in time for our 50th Anniversary in 2023. Do you have family recipes you would like to share?
Let us know.

Stayed tuned to hear what else we will be doing to celebrate!

From our President Mabel Menard

The Asian American community has seen a significant uptick in verbal and physical assaults on Asian Americans across the country, especially due to Chinese people, and by proxy Asian Americans, having been blamed for the COVID-19 pandemic.

I have been talking to the press and journalism students about how our community has mobilized, from speaking out, raising awareness, organizing neighborhood patrols, and working with other community organizations and other marginalized groups, to pushing for prosecution of hate crimes against Asian Americans and reframing the narrative.

An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. It is up to us to speak up and speak out. As we say in Chicago, if you see something, say something. Let perpetrators know hate incidents and hate crimes will not be tolerated.
To combat the current rise in harassment and discrimination and to also proactively prepare for the future increase of hate incidents, Advancing Justice | Chicago is partnering with New York-based nonprofit Hollaback! and CAIR-Chicago to plan and implement an aggressive scaling up of locally-led bystander hate incident intervention trainings for community members. Find out more here.

Becoming a member is an incredible opportunity to engage in your community and strengthen our collective power. Membership starts as low as $10/year.
As a nonprofit, we rely on donations and sponsorships to fund our programs.

As we continue to adjust to programming during the COVID-19 pandemic, we look forward to seeing you in the virtual space as we plan our 2021 programming schedule. We are in the process of collaborating with the Center for Asian Pacific American Women (CAPAW) and The Asian & Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship (National ACE) to offer a mentoring program to Asian American women restaurateurs across the country. Another project we are working on is an interactive virtual event exploring AAPI history in the Chicago area cohosted with the Chicago chapter of Pilipino American Unity for Progress, Inc. (UniPro).

Also in the works are leadership development programs for specific audiences and open to the public, including APA Y-Advocate and APIA U Leadership, leadership development training programs for high school students and college students respectively, MAAP: Mentoring Asian American Professionals, and B3: Build, Breakthrough & Believe, a professional development program for aspiring Asian American and Pacific Islander young professionals.

Your donation will go a long way towards helping us continue to offer programs that benefit, inform, and educate our communities.
