From the CBA District Manager:

Hello all,

As the weather turns and COVID-19 vaccines roll out, I am hopeful that we can safely resume our community-based activities in the near future.

Last month's newsletter touched on CBA’s engagement work.  So far, the responses have been great!  The data shows a strong community desire to have increased access to affordable housing and health care. This month's newsletter will highlight both.

- Eron Riddle, CBA District Manager

Live Here! 141 units coming to Cully Blvd!

Las Adelitas
6723 NE Killingsworth St

This will be the largest redevelopment project in the Cully neighborhood to date, and the largest public investment in Cully.  The redevelopment will include 141 homes, 8,000 square feet of community space, an outdoor plaza, and officially breaks ground this month.   The Cully Blvd Alliance has provided funding to support this project throughout it's multiple phases, most recently providing financial support to remove the old "Sugar Shack" building from the premises.

When CBA first started its work almost a decade ago we went through an extensive community engagement process.  The removal of the unsafe buildings and illegal business practices on this site was the overwhelming community priority at that time.  We are quite excited for this final step in the process of transforming this property into something that will be a vital community asset come to pass.

The CBA recently approved district improvement funds to assist in infrastructural improvements needed to get development underway.  The building will be 4-stories comprised of 50 units ranging from studios, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom units. Our programming partner NAYA Family Center is leading a group of community based organizations on this property.    More information to come in the upcoming months once the project if fully funded and ready to go.

Business Spotlight:
Working Class Acupuncture

Working Class Acupuncture

Long time Cully based non-profit Working Class Acupuncture works hard to provide low-cost health care services to those in need.  They have a strong focus on equity and charge based on income using a  sliding scale method to ensure equitable access to all.  Their stated goal is to " offer people as much acupuncture as they want, in support of whatever goals they have, so that they can use it in whatever way works best for them."    We had a chance to check in with members of their leadership and this is what they had to say:

What inspired you to open a business in Cully?
We opened WCA in 2002 because our founders, Skip and Lisa, had bought a house in Cully for their family.  We wanted to provide affordable acupuncture to our neighbors.

What exciting things are happening at your business?
At the moment the most exciting thing is surviving COVID!  Seriously, though, we are excited to be celebrating 19 years this month of providing community acupuncture.  Adapting to COVID has helped us make some positive changes in our organization and even plan for the future.  (Also, we are grateful for the grant from the Cully Boulevard Alliance that helped us buy a new washing machine! We do a LOT of laundry, so a new washer is exciting.)

What is your favorite thing about the Cully neighborhood?
The people! Also the fact that we have the best coffee (thanks to the Bison Coffeehouse), and also the best park (Cully Park).

Is there anything else you want Cully community members to know about your business?
We use an affordable sliding scale for acupuncture ($20 to $40 per treatment) but, particularly during COVID, finances are a challenge for many people and so if our sliding scale feels out of reach, we will work with you to help you get the treatment you need. Please just ask. We want to serve as many of our neighbors as we possibly can.

Our mission statement is: Working Class Acupuncture provides low-cost acupuncture to the community through a cooperative, grassroots, financially self-sustaining model. Our goal is to offer people as much acupuncture as they want, in support of whatever goals they have, so that they can use it in whatever way works best for them.
