Meet Volunteer of the Month,
Doug Handlong!
Tell Us About Yourself! I have been married to Deanne for 27 years. We have three kids, Kallie, Abby, and Jeffrey. I love the outdoors, camping, hiking, more than anything fishing! I love sports, especially baseball.
How long have you been volunteering at Mingus and in what roles? I first came to camp in I think summer of 1991 as a counselor. I was invited by Rev. John Blackwell at Elementary Camp 2. It was July - it rains in July. But that has been the camp I have enjoyed most over the years and any camp in July. There is something about the rain at Mingus. Maybe it’s the porch, the coffee, and the company. I have done most everything a volunteer can do. Even pulled duty in the craft cabin when we didn’t have staff. Program dean, spiritual director, music leader, counselor. I have even washed some dishes.
Why is Camp Ministry important to you? A change of pace + a change of space = A change in perspective. Camp changes lives. How people see God, see one another, and how they see life. Camp is transformational. Ask anyone who has ever been to camp about the time when they were at camp. They have a story. I would bet if you ask them if their life was changed for the better, they would say, “Without a doubt!”
Favorite camp activity: Sitting on the porch, with students, listening to them laugh while it rains, drinking a cup of coffee.
Favorite camp food: I can’t think of anything I have ever eaten at camp that I haven’t liked. I am hardly a picky eater. But what rises to the top is oatmeal! Always—oatmeal!
Favorite camp song: Heart Song---Music book inside cover. Short and simple.
Best part of being a camp volunteer: Connected with people from everywhere, knowing their lives will be better, hopefully transformed, by the time we shared together. Sending them out to love God and people more fully.
Favorite camp memory: Snipe hunting. Did you know there are snipe at Camp Mingus? Oh yes! Late at night, they come out and wander through the woods. I was even with a group of guys who swore they saw them. I could hardly keep up. It still makes me laugh when I think about it.
Thank you, Doug! We love you!
