Women in Surf Event at Sorrento SLSC

What a wonderful afternoon we had on Sunday to celebrate 40 years of Women in Surf!!

Thank you to the volunteers that organised and ran the event and Sorrento SLSC for hosting the event.

2020 marks 40 years since women were given the opportunity by Surf Life Saving Australia to achieve their Bronze Medallions, don the iconic red and yellow patrol uniform and actively patrol Australian beaches as surf lifesavers.

Prior to July 1980, women’s roles in Surf Life Saving Clubs were restricted to support and back-office functions. With the exception of a number of women who were allowed to patrol beaches as surf lifesavers during World War II, women were prevented from participating in active patrol duties on the beach. The prevailing attitudes of many people at the time were that women weren’t physically capable of carrying out an aquatic rescue in the surf.

However, Surf Life Saving Australia’s National Council passed a motion in early 1980 that recommended from 1 July that year, surf clubs across Australia allow women to become active patrolling members, after successfully obtaining their Bronze Medallions.

Youth News

Welcome back from the long weekend. Hopefully you were able to get a decent break and able to relax and recharge.
Trigg Carnival this Sunday.  Registrations due in by 12.00 pm today (Tuesday 2 March).

Sunday Session
Despite it being a long weekend, it was great to have 31 youth check-in. Congrats to all on completing the youth swim. Great to see everyone dig in and complete the full distance, well done. Thanks also to our water safety and Lisa for running this.
U17/U15 vs U14 tug-o-war saw the U17/15’s take out the title 2-1.  Everyone backed this up with a 4 person 1.4km relay. Up from 1km the week before. Good to see everyone including the fish in the team giving this a go.

Skills  section we worked on 5 person rescues. Patient, Tube Rescuer, Board Rescuer, 2pp Carry. From there we split into Surf & Beachies. A float of about 24 youth on boards headed down towards the Mac Club for an endurance paddle; the remainder worked on flag skills. Great to have a lot of smiling faces in the surf and on the sand and seeing the energy transfer into teams and friendships.

To all the youth that gave the Club Champs a go on Monday, well done!! We hope that you enjoyed it and really got to enjoy the fun of being part of Team Green.

Have a great week all.
