A Word from Council

Conversations have continued regarding around students returning to school and students remaining in a virtual learning environment. We are keeping track of the updated guidance in order to provide support to our member PTAs. This week we are sharing specific things families can do in support of all children.
  1. Parents can use their voices to advocate by contacting the Governor's Office, the WA Department of Health, OSPI, and our state legislators and representatives regarding mitigating the distance measures for schools.
  2. Parents can also provide input around waiving the building attendance and seat time requirements of students that want to continue in a remote learning model.
  3. It is also incredibly helpful for legislators and other decision makers to hear from students, in their own words, how the learning situations affect them.
Please feel free to contact any member of our board if you have any questions.

-Brandi Comstock, LWPTSA Council President

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

multi-colored hands form leaves on a treeAs you do the work of PTA, consider how you can view it through the DEI lens.
  • Your PTA's nominating committee does the important work of identifying the future leaders of your organization. Are there any barriers to getting a diverse group of candidates before your nominating committee?
  • Your budget committee plans your PTA's income and expenses for the next year. Does your proposed budget accurately align with your PTA's values and goals around diversity, equity and inclusion?
  • If your PTA is thinking of adding a new DEI role, do you have a job description for the role?
For help with these questions or others, please contact Council DEI Co-Chairs Sabeet Sidhu and Sequoya Lange.

All PTA leaders are welcome to attend the March DEI committee meeting on Wednesday, March 10. Looking for a virtual community? Join our DEI Facebook group.

Sustainability Tip: Lead by Example

hand holding a green earth

Last month, we shared ideas for how families can take simple steps to reduce their plastic waste by making some lifestyle changes at home. This month we’re going to apply the same concept to our PTAs as we did to our homes by looking at the activities and programs our PTAs support and assessing whether any of them involve unnecessary plastic. This should be a group effort and it won’t get done overnight. Even if your PTA doesn’t change much this year, you can start planning now and set the stage for next year!
