Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #491 - 09 March 2021

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to
share/forward this eNewsletter with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.

05 March, from Ku-ring-gai Command: A brief summary for this last week.
Unfortunately, we are still experiencing some vehicles being stolen, property being stolen from within vehicles, break and enters into homes and unit complex storage cages. Please remain vigilant and lock your doors and windows to your homes, vehicles and storage units and report any suspicious person or activity at the time of the incident.
We have received some late reports from some folk, telling us they saw a suspicious person on or near their driveway a day or two prior to the report. Whilst we appreciate this feedback and we encourage all feedback and information given to us, I must reiterate that timely reporting gives us the best chance to engage the suspicious person/s at the time of the suspicious activity.
Please remain vigilant, look out for your neighbour and call us if your suspicion is aroused. If your suspicion turns out to be nothing, then great. On the flip side, it could just be our offender. Please call us at the time or as close to the time of the suspicious activity.
Now to end the week on a brighter note;
Reports have been received of a hacker trying to steal from unsuspecting victims by placing devices on ATMs enabling him to hack into their accounts. A description of the male was given to police which was then circulated amongst our officers.
While on a foot patrol our officers saw a male, who matched the hacker’s description. A foot pursuit followed with the suspect evading police and running out of sight.
When the officers were asked by their supervisor where the hacker had run to, they replied, “We don’t know Sergeant. He just ransomeware”. 🙂
Have a great and safe weekend and know that we are out there 24/7 with the focus on keeping you and your property safe – but we need to work together.

03 March, from Ku-ring-gai Command: Stealing of motor vehicles update:
Further to our post yesterday regarding the thefts of vehicles throughout the command, we ask you to continue to be aware, remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour that occurs in your area at the time or as close to the time of the occurrence as possible.
This is not just occurring in the Kuring Gai Command, but within other Commands as well.
Whilst some vehicles have been stolen, there were attempts to steal other vehicles on the same nights. We are aware that there is a possibility that the perpetrators may return at some stage in order to attempt to take the vehicles they unsuccessful tried to steal earlier.
Rest assured that Kuring Gai General Duties crews unmarked vehicles and plain clothed units continue to patrol in the early hours of the morning and throughout the days and nights and with the help of our community, we’ll have the best chance of apprehending these criminals
Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour at the time it is occurring

A man has been charged after allegedly threatening a youth with a knife on a train on Sydney’s North Shore earlier today.
About 9.15am (Sunday 7 March 2021), a 17-year-old boy boarded a citybound train at Killara Railway Station when an unknown man entered the carriage a short time later and sat nearby.
Police will allege the man approached the youth and threatened him with a knife.
The youth exited the train at Milsons Point Railway Station and police were notified.
About 9.30am, officers from the Police Transport Command arrested a 37-year-old man at Central Railway Station following a short foot pursuit.
During a search of the man, police located a knife hidden in his pants and during a further search, a flick knife and a pair of scissors were located in his pockets.
He was taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence and custody of knife in public place.
The Terrey Hills man was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court tomorrow (Monday 8 March 2021).

05 March, from NSW Police Force: SCAM ALERT!
We’ve had several reports of scam callers pretending to be from the NSW Police Force and threatening call recipients with fines or arrest.
The scammer states that the person receiving the call has an outstanding fine or warrant. They then demand a form of payment to prevent arrest or further court action. Reports also indicate that the scammers ask for a copy of a driver's licence and photo for 'identification purposes'.
The NSW Police Force will never call a member of the public and demand payment over the phone in order to avoid going to court or being arrested.
If you get an unexpected call from someone who states they're from the police, and starts asking for personal details or threatens you, don't pay any money or provide personal details and please HANG UP.
If you’re concerned, you can always verify by contacting your local police or the Police Assistance Line directly on 131 444.
To find out more information about scams, or to find out other ways to protect yourself, visit site here. If you have been the victim of a scam, you can report it to local police or to the ACCC online at the ‘SCAMwatch report a scam’ page.
