NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is commissioning a new cohort through the HDS Professional Clinical Doctorate programme beginning in September/October 2021, with places across all the NHS Boards in Scotland. You will be eligible for professional accreditation with the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP) and membership of the Scottish Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (SAPP).

This is a four year, full-time course to clinical qualification with further time needed to complete the doctoral thesis. Entry to the course is dependent on:
  • Work experience
  • Pre-clinical studies
  • Personal suitability
  • Academic requirements
  • Personal analysis
This course is the only one in Scotland which is approved by the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP).
This clinical training was first accredited by the ACP in 1989 when it was delivered by the Scottish Institute of Human Relations. In 2007, the training was validated as a doctoral programme, in conjunction with the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust/University of East London.   Since 2017 this course has been accredited by Robert Gordon University.

Scotland has a vibrant psychoanalytic community and Human Development Scotland is the centre for clinical training in adult psychotherapy, in therapeutic work with children and young people, in psychodynamic counselling and a range short courses in areas such as infant mental health and working with adolescents.
