Weekly Meditation

Scripture:  Hebrews 11:13-19 (the Message translation)

"Each one of these people of faith died not yet having in hand what was promised, but still believing. How did they do it? They saw it way off in the distance, waved their greeting, and accepted the fact that they were transients in this world."  Hebrews 11:13-14

There's an old folk song that declares:

I'm just a poor wayfaring stranger
Traveling through this world below
There is no sickness, no toil, nor danger
In that bright land to which I go

Hebrews 11 is a reminder that we are strangers and sojourners in this world. We are all on a journey. On that journey, we seek and search for that place to call home. We are on a journey where we long for something more than what we experience in our lives. We are transients, the book of Hebrews writes, seeking a homeland. This world is only a portion of our journey. We long for home, for that end to our journey, a place where the restlessness of our hearts is satisfied. We long for that heavenly home where we are fully known and where the troubles of this life have come to an end.  St. Augustine once wrote, "that our hearts are restless until we find our rest in thee." Hebrews 11 reminds us that the homeland we may seek may seem far off. However, It is that heavenly vision of a home that gives us strength for the journey. Though we are transients in this world there is within our hearts a place for the home to be made along the journey. Our Lord Jesus is the one in whom our hearts can find a place to call home. When we look to him and when we look to that vision of that heavenly homeland we can continue this earthly journey.  We may be tired of the wilderness, we may be tired of traveling through this world below but there is a place for each of us to call home! Keep traveling, don't give up, keep pressing on, there's a great camp meeting in the promised land.

PRAYER
God, we are strangers and sojourners on this journey of life. Remind us on our pilgrim journey that there is a city, there is a home that is our dwelling place. Give us strength for each day knowing God, that you are the source of our strength and the strength of our life.
