A Note from Polly

One semester in seminary, I joined a lunch table group of folks who wanted to discuss parts of St. Augustine’s Confessions. I was the tribute, or to be more specific, I was the self-designated question-asker in the group. Neither could I translate the Latin in which this great work was written, nor had I much grasp of 4th century history or philosophy. What I did have, though, is a great love of this prayer of Augustine:

"Almighty God, in whom we live and move and have our being, you have made us for yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Grant us purity of heart and strength of purpose, so that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness from doing it. Grant that in your light we may see light clearly, and in your service find our perfect freedom. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen."

In Confessions, Augustine is not laying out all his misdeeds. The title speaks to a confession of faith. He is trying to make sense of God’s calling humans into being, giving them free-will (aka sin), and humans trying to find their purpose (and discovering redemption). I got the feeling that Augustine was powerfully struck by the paradox of "service to God" is really the only "perfect freedom." Augustine’s prayer feeds me this Lent as I work to rest in God—and realize the paradox in that. I share this with you as you walk your own journey, hoping you know you are not alone.

In Peace, Polly

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

March 7

Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
