March is Women's History Month. On behalf of SLC Fire, I would like to join in the many voices who are taking the time to recognize and celebrate the vital role of women in our community. Salt Lake City is privileged to have a number of women serving, not the least of whom is our Mayor, Erin Mendenhall. I am also proud that SLC Fire counts a number of women, both sworn and civilian, within our ranks. Over the last five years, our recruiting methods have paid dividends and more women than ever are interested in joining the fire service. I want to encourage all young people to explore the possibility of a career in the fire service. Here at SLC Fire, our goal is to work toward ensuring that the diversity of our community is mirrored in that of the fire department sworn to serve you. SLC Fire recognized five SLC International Airport employees for their efforts to provide life-saving care to a patient experiencing cardiac arrest while traveling. Fire Chief Karl Lieb conferred Medals of Courage upon Jordan Tatton, James Udall, Matt Ketcher, Jason Vancampen, and Drew Goodman. We are grateful to them for their service and support!

COVID-19 Update
SLC Fire's daily operations continue to be impacted by COVID-19 and related concerns. We have modified several department policies and protocols in response to these concerns and feel confident that the actions taken serve to protect both our workforce and the greater SLC community. A few precautionary measures currently in place are:
Over 80% of SLC Fire employees have been fully vaccinated
SLC Fire employees wear surgical or cloth masks at the workplace when isolation or social distancing is not feasible or appropriate.
SLC Fire employees wear surgical or cloth masks when in public for non-medical response reasons, such as trips to the grocery store.
All calls for medical assistance are treated as potential COVID-19 exposures and our firefighters wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when responding.
Patients requesting emergency medical assistance may be asked to meet first responders outdoors or in a large room whenever possible.
First responders may ask family members, friends, and bystanders to provide a safe distance (6 ft. or greater) from the responding crew members on any emergency scene.
SLC Fire has suspended participation in public and in-person activities, such as station tours, school visits, etc. Please visit our website to find educational videos that can replace these types of activities until we can resume them safely!
Firefighters who are ill or have sick family at home are requested to stay home to recuperate, waiting to return to work until they are medically cleared to do so.
