Lessons from Women 55+ on Ageism and the Importance of Remaining Engaged in Physical Activity, Recreation and Sport

This session will explore ageism and the ways in which to overcome it in order to get women 55+ engaged in physical activity and recreation. Further, we will hear about work being done by Canadian Women and Sport (formerly CAAWS) that describes the challenges, solutions and motivations for women to become and stay active. Finally, two speakers will share how they’ve put these lessons into practice and talk about their own personal lived experience.

Health Practioners and Physical Literacy
The situation in Canada

People living physically active lifestyles will lead to healthier communities through injury prevention and general health and wellness. The overlap between the sport, recreation, education, and health sectors not only helps with the integration of facilities and the delivery of quality sport and physical activity programming, but it ultimately leads to a healthy Canadian population.

Data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) indicates that the average Canadian is weaker, less flexible, and fatter than they were just a generation ago (twenty years). This means that as a country, we are less physically fit than we have been in the past.

Physical activity is an integral component of healthy living: regular participation in physical activities is associated with important physical, cognitive and emotional benefits contributing to healthy musculoskeletal development, maintenance of healthy body weights, prevention of high blood pressure, and social and mental development.

How physical literacy helps health practitioners

Physical literacy initiatives readily align with early and preventative healthcare and collaborates with both primary care and allied health practitioners. This focus on health and wellness is one way in which physical literacy fits into Canada’s health care model.

By putting the programs in place that will give people an active start – a start that will help them develop the competence, confidence, and motivation that make up physical literacy, our work with the health sector can increase the chance that our population will get healthier and stay physically active for life.

Nutrition and Wellness Tips

Nutrition Tip

Snack Science

To snack or not to snack - the dilemma. Snacks can contribute to overall nutrient adequacy or a poor nutrient profile. Where the snacks fall depends on the WHAT, WHY, and HOW. Snacks can be a healthy part of your eating pattern by choosing quality healthy foods and limiting highly processed ones (the what), eating snacks mindfully (the why), and planning for snacks that contribute to your overall plan for a healthy nutritious day (the how).  Check out Health Canada website for some tips and snack recipes http://bit.ly/3bPIWaU

Alumni - Owen Lindsey

Since my graduation from Physical Literacy, I’ve started my graduate studies in the faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. My current research project is aimed at validating a vibration-emitting wearable technology used to assess clinical skin sensitivity. Alongside my supervisor at the U of C, I will assess skin sensitivity of healthy and diseased populations using wearable insoles in an attempt to replace current measures that have proven to be imprecise. Recently, I’ve had the privilege of instructing statistic programming tutorials in an Advanced Neuroscience Lab section as a teaching assistant. In this lab, I’ve delivered tutorials in topics relating to neuroscience and computer programming, and have been included in research article presentations focussed on exploring neurophysiological techniques. Most importantly though, I have continued research at MRU under the supervision of Dr. Jared Fletcher. Our research will serve to describe workload measures and jump mechanics of collegiate volleyball players– a project we have been working on since late 2019. We hope to continue conducting research on our Cougar athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure they are in tip top shape when they get back into action!
