In this month's Newsletter we discuss...

SOLAR ENERGY - THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL

The ongoing climate crisis is making us all alive to the need to reduce carbon emissions. There are many exciting emerging technologies: some are rather technical, and others a bit more well established and widely used.  Solar energy is the second - and what could be more delightful than sunshine?

But we have also been asked to comment on larger schemes and here the more troubling aspects of renewable investments come into play. All development needs to be appropriate to its setting –  no matter what its intention or green credentials.

INTEGRATED GREEN ROOFS AND SOLAR PANELS

Utilising roof space for increased biodiversity and generating energy is an innovative  feature of many new urban developments, such as Clapham Park and the linear walkway at Circus Street, Brighton. This integrated approach uses solar mounted panels within an extensive Green Roof setting to provide a mosaic of micro habitats, providing many environmental benefits.  Click here for full article

HABITAT REGULATION UPDATE

Late last month the government re-affirmed protection of sites covered under the Habitats Regulations - these are the European-wide sites, SPAs and SACs.  There is no suggestion of any relaxation in protection nor regulatory procedures, and it is unlikely that any challenge to SPA status or consideration is likely to be successful as a result.

The need for Stage 1 & 2 Assessments remain.
If you have a scheme that may impact a SAC, or SPA designation, please contact us for assistance.
