March 2021

Trail Conditions

Happy March!  This time of year folks are anxious to hit the trails.  Unfortunately most of our lower elevation trail systems get muddy during the freeze/thaw cycle.  See picture taken in Moore Park on right above.  The best time to enjoy trails is either in the morning when they are still frozen or after several days of dry weather.  Most Spence trails still have some snow and ice.  Currently all-weather trails with gravel surfaces are open for business to include Eulalona trail, Link River trail, Wingwatchers trail and the Geo Trail.  Hopefully by April we will see an improvement in trail conditions.

Another new path on Spence Mountain

By Lee Juillerat for the Herald and News, February 12, 2021

The original plan was to hike a very pleasant loop Spence Mountain trail that begins at the Shoalwater Bay Trailhead, follows alongside the bay, climbs gently up Spence’s west flanks, then snakes downhill back to the trailhead.

It’s a 4.5-mile hike that’s easy, pleasant and scenic. It offers up-close views of some of Upper Klamath Lake’s marshes and, from its higher perches, sweeping views of the bay, lake and mountains framing the aptly named Mountain Lakes Wilderness, along with Mount McLoughlin and Pelican Butte in the Sky Lakes Wilderness Area. It’s a hike I’ve done and enjoyed several times.

But this day, I wanted something different. Something new. Something more challenging.

Action Plan list for 2021

Enclosed is a list of things that Klamath Trails Alliance would like to accomplish this year.  Typically we don't get everything done on our list but we get the majority.  The list of action plans help focus our efforts and better utilize our limited resources.  If you see something that you would like to be involved with please let us know.

Trail Maintenance

February was another slow month for trail maintenance but we did tally 9 hours of trail work.  Work performed included light brushing, limbing to improve sightlines and drainage work.

Please post your maintenance hours on our trail work log. You can include drive time to and from the trail location. This helps us track volunteer hours and is especially important when applying for grants as it shows community support!

Fred Meyer's Community Rewards & AmazonSmile Helps KTA!

If you shop at Fred Meyer or Amazon you could be helping KTA with your purchases. There are “no strings attached” other than having to set-up an online account if you don’t have one.
A frequently asked question about the Fred Meyer charity program is whether you lose your reward points by naming a charity.  The simple answer is NO. Here is a link to the frequently asked questions and information on how to link your rewards card.

AmazonSmile is also simple to set-up. Follow this link to support of Klamath Trails Alliance or this link for more information.  With Amazon you will need to place your order on the AmazonSmile site in order in to generate contributions back to KTA.
