There’s some talk of a road map for England today.  We’ll see.  We’ve half a suspicion there might not be much meat on the bone for us.  The prevailing westerly wind means that outdoor eating and drinking in April in SW England or Wales is a bit of a punt, if that’s what they decide.  But we’ll keep an eye on things and adjust our planning if we need to.

At the moment, we’re not taking any bookings for stays before 1 May, which once looked pessimistic, before swinging 180 degrees to currently optimistic.  If you’d like to stay over the summer, email our teams.  We have the sense that Cornwall particularly is filling up as everyone consigns their passports to the back of the drawer.

We send you our best wishes at what is clearly becoming a more difficult period than last Spring for many of us.  We really will soon all be out and about, treasuring our freedom in a way that perhaps we haven't always.  Scroll down for a little more on our world.

SOME REMINDERS

If you’re the proud owner of an EDS voucher, remember that we don’t enforce expiry dates.  So if you can’t find a way to use it this summer, no need to panic.  And we’ve not charged a single fee for any Covid related cancellation since March last year (whether illness, isolation or travel restrictions).  That will continue to be our policy right through the Spring and the Summer.

When we do re-open, it will be with the same attention to detail that we brought to our inns right through last summer and autumn.  Our experience of hospitality in 2020 was that it addressed the challenges of Covid with exceptional rigour.  Quite how it deserves some of the politicians’ scorn that we hear is a real frustration for many of us.

STRETCHING UP AND OUT

The Gurnard's Head
7 may be the magic number but 8 is 14.29% more magic if you’re in the business of selling bedrooms.  So we look forward to opening an 8th and new best bedroom at both The Griffin and The Gurnard’s Head when we unlock the doors.  To be brutally commercial, the maths of this industry work just that little bit better with every extra bedroom you can find.  We’ll reveal a little more on these projects as we head through the Spring but, if you find yourself booking and would like to trade up, let the team know.

WINE @ HOME

Our wine suppliers took a deep breath at the first lockdown as their sales to our trade melted away.  But the nation's thirst kicked into action and they twisted effectively to sell directly to their private clients.  Now a second extended lockdown blends with the challenges of importing post-Brexit to furrow their brows.

If you'd like to extend beyond Majestic, we recommend a look at VinetrailCarte Blanche Wines and Fingal Rock Wines for (generally) France, Bat & Bottle for Italy, Raymond Reynolds for Iberia and (very close to our hearts) Eclectic Wines for Greece.  Or More Wine for low impact Bag in Box and Red Squirrel for wines generally from beyond Europe. All will deliver if you order enough.
