Devoe L. Moore Center: Interdisciplinary Research Flourishes

Happy Monday DMC friends and supporters! We are grateful for another week of progress and persistence at our center. Today's newsletter spotlights our exciting research efforts.

The Art of Booking Talent

The DMC is proud to highlight our continued relationship with Free Minds Film. Last week, we had the honor of collaboratively hosting Ariane Nalty! Affiliates at and beyond the DMC went behind the scenes to learn how Ariane secures A-listers, attracts high-impact media coverage, and makes an impact in the middle of some of the most talked-about events of our time.

While Ariane has mastered the art of getting celebrities to say yes, she rarely says yes to interviews. The DMC, as well as Courtney and Ted Balaker from Free Minds Film, were privileged to talk to Ariane about her life in network news. If it’s important or salacious, Ariane Nalty has covered it. She’s a two-time Emmy-winning producer at ABC News. She’s booked A-listers and power brokers like Katy Perry, Barbara Streisand, and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp for shows like Good Morning America and World News Tonight.

The meeting was not recorded, but have no fear! More workshops and collaborations with Free Minds Film are in the works.

Staff Spotlight: De’Shawn Brundidge

The DMC is proud of our tangible products: new blog posts, reports, digital media, and more; however, in the background of the public facing materials are our research assistants who are working tirelessly to identify, analyze, and utilize data. De’Shawn Brundidge, for instance, is working around the clock to assess recent data on small business in Leon county. De’Shawn’s budding research asks a complex question: how are locally-owned restaurants and small food service businesses negatively affected by Covid-19?

Last week, De’Shawn reviewed the data published by the Florida Chamber of Commerce in their report titled, The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Florida’s Small Business. De’Shawn is actively seeking supplemental sources to contextualize and analyze the data from the report. He endeavors to apply his findings to the current College Town and Gaines Street Corridor Project at the DeVoe L. Moore Center.

Undergraduate Research Takes Center Stage

Three undergraduate researchers have been selected to present at the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference (FURC) this Friday and Saturday (2/26-2/27). The conference was created by the Florida Undergraduate Research Association (FURA) and has a state-wide reputation for spotlighting the top researchers in the state. To present virtually, each researcher has prepared a 2-3 minute poster presentation, and you’re in luck—the videos are up NOW on our Youtube channel! Still want to learn more? Check out their abstracts, which you can view in full on our blog, here. Still curious? Read over their research questions, too!:

Alumni Spotlight: Jason Blackthorne

Jason Blackthorne contributed to the DMC during the 2019-20 academic year as a Public Policy Research Assistant. While with the center, he was selected to present at the 2020 APEE conference, which was cancelled due to the pandemic. The selection committee applauded his work, which analyzed the effectiveness and efficiency of the residential permitting process in Tallahassee, Florida. He graduated in the Spring of 2020 with his MA in Applied Economics—and his accomplishments did not terminate there!

Currently, Jason is a research specialist at a Tech ROI Research firm, Nucleus Research. The firm prioritizes consistency, connectivity, and credibility: all values that align with the DMC’s evidence-based research philosophy. Jason is actively applying the philosophy and methodologies we prioritize at the center. Stay tuned for more updates on Jason’s promising career research; we are confident there is plenty more to come.
