Engine Off. Every Stop.

22nd Feb 2021 sees the launch of the new ‘Engines Off Every Stop’ campaign from Idling Action London, an anti-idling advertising campaign targeting all London drivers.

Idling Action London, jointly led by City of London Corporation and London Borough of Camden, is a Mayor’s Air Quality Fund project that sees 30 local authorities and City of London Corporation working together to tackle engine idling as a source of avoidable air pollution.

The campaign visualises the unknown and surprising amount of pollution that can be created from a single idling vehicle engine.

Engine off. Every stop.’ gives London’s drivers a clear action to safeguard personal and public health. Switching off when parked is the easiest way to minimise unnecessary pollution. With a basic change in behaviour Londoners can practically engage with air quality issues and make a positive difference at a critical moment.

The four-week campaign includes out of home posters and billboards on roadside sites across London, as well as a radio advertisement, a short film, social media activity, and online events.

Join our online campaign launch event on 23rd February at 4-5pm where we will showcase showcase what our project partners have be doing to tackle idling. And residents, businesses, community groups and Londoners can find out how they can get involved with the month long campaign.

London mortality from air pollution

A new report from Imperial College London shows that the number of deaths per year attributable to air pollution in London has reduced to 4100 for 2019. This is a large reduction from the earlier figure of 9,400 per year, from the previous study published back in 2015 and shows that air quality policies and work from the City of London, London boroughs and the Mayor of London is having a significant positive impact on health.

Also recently published is an updated indicator, the Fraction of mortality attributablle to particulate air pollution in the Public Health Outcomes Framework. This is the fraction of adult mortality attributable to man-made particulate air pollution (measured as fine particulate matter, PM2.5). In the City of London this has reduced from 9% to 6.9% between 2010 and 2019.
