First Week of Lent

February 22-28, 2021

The gospel reading from yesterday was of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. We continue our meditation on this text by examining when we, too, have been on a wilderness journey. A friend of mine who was going through a challenging time cut out pictures of rocks and sand. She pasted them all around her bathroom mirror to remind herself of what a wilderness or desert looked like and felt like. She kept them on her mirror until she no longer needed them. Her time in the wilderness had passed, and she was ready to greet life with whatever it held for her.

Jesus, too spends time, as we know, alone in the wilderness. It was for Mark not a time to be tempted, as Satan is never mentioned, but I believe a time when he could set his heart, mind, and spirit for his life of ministry to everyone he would encounter. A life decision which, as we know, had terrible consequences for him. Looking back over your life, where were the desert experiences? Where did you find strength? Who did you lean on for support?

Wayne is having a well deserved Sunday off. Morning Prayer is online at

It is my great pleasure to introduce David von Behren as guest organist for our worship service next Sunday, February 28. I first met David at the Oregon Bach Festival’s Organ Institute in 2016. We quickly established a connection since his grandfather Erich was organist at St. Lorenz Church in Frankenmuth, MI – Ginny’s hometown. David earned his Bachelor's degree at Cleveland Institute of Music and his Master's degree at Yale. Named as one of Diapason magazine’s “20 under 30” in 2016, he received wider national recognition as a rising star concert organist. With organ mentors such as Todd Wilson at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Paul Jacobs at the Oregon Bach Festival, and Martin Jean at Yale, David was appointed Assistant University Organist and Choirmaster of the Memorial Church at Harvard University in September 2019.  You can learn more about David by visiting his website www.davidvonbehren.com.

Beginning March 7, 2021, 45 people can attend worship.
Following diocesan guidelines, we are still unable to sing and masks must be worn along with keeping a distance of six feet from one another.

Isabel Wilkerson's book "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents" is the next book discussion Tuesday March 23 at 7pm.

In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings.  amazon
