Opinion
Hello <<First Name>>,
Martin Adel Makary, M.D., M.P.H. of Johns Hopkins Medicine argued in the pages of the Wall Street Journal that we’ll have herd immunity from the novel coronavirus by April. His reasoning is that many people have had Covid-19 but didn’t get tested and the vaccination program has already inoculated 15 percent of the U.S. He also argues, based on the infection rate per population vs. the infection rate per number of tests, that roughly 2/3 of the US population has suffered the infection and now has immunity. That’s a bunch of folks!
The vaccinated figure is rising quickly. He cites a former FDA commissioner who estimates 150 million will have received the vaccination by the end of March. We’re going herd. Herd! More at WSJ.
The San Angelo Rodeo starts April 9, just in time!
However, the dwindling Covid numbers probably doesn’t sit well with the Democrats. They need the health crisis to continue so these politicians can exploit us, control more of our lives and spend billions on government bailouts. Expect wild warnings of new strains not covered by the vaccines. Or that recovered Covid survivors are only immune for like three weeks after regaining their taste buds.
After all, academic studies producing Covid fearmongering are all true and based on science and facts or whatever. Such as this one:
In CNN last Tuesday, the headline screamed that reparations for slavery could have reduced Covid-19 transmission. The story is about a peer reviewed study published by Harvard Medical School and the Lancet Commission on Reparations and Redistributive Justice that claimed had reparation payments happened before the pandemic, it would have reduced coronavirus transmission in the state of Louisiana between 31 and 68 percent lower. Where do these academics come up with these ideas for making studies?
Who is funding who? Big Tech employees financed the Biden campaign; more traditional industry employees sent money to Trump. In the WSJ Sunday:
"Employees of Google’s parent, Alphabet Inc., and Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc. and Facebook Inc. were the five largest sources of money for Mr. Biden’s campaign and joint fundraising committees among those identifying corporate employers, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of campaign finance reports.
“Mr. Biden’s presidential campaign received at least $15.1 million from employees of those five tech firms, records show. The companies declined to comment.”
…
“The top sources of money from corporate employees to the Republican incumbent Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign were employees of American Airlines Group Inc., Boeing Co. , Bank of America Corp. , Lockheed Martin Corp. and Wells Fargo & Co., according to the Center for Responsive Politics’s analysis.” More in the WSJ.
Also in the WSJ, the reason for the failure of the Texas electric power grid is revealed.
“The system broke down this week when 185 generating units, including gas and coal-fired power plants, tripped offline during the brunt of the storm. Wind turbines in West Texas froze as well, and a nuclear unit near the Gulf of Mexico went down for more than 48 hours. Another problem emerged: Some power plants lost their pipeline supply of gas and couldn’t generate electricity even if they wanted to capture the high prices.”
We reported that this happened in a Feb. 16 story. Early morning Feb 15, the electricity frequency of the grid dropped to 59.3 Hz, knocking off those natural gas and coal power generation plants. All of the coal plants remained off line for the next day or two. The drop in frequency could have been caused by ERCOT operators not shedding enough load off the grid as windmills in west Texas froze up, ceasing to generate any power at all.

West Texas Kidnapper Pleads Guilty to Abducting 9-Year-Old Girl. "During the birthday party in August, a woman began choking and most of the attendees went to assist with her sudden health emergency. While the minor’s father was attending to the woman, Mr. Gonzales lured the 9-year-old away by asking for help carrying alcohol to his vehicle. Mr. Gonzales encouraged the girl to get inside the vehicle and then he drove away. The girl’s disappearance set off a frantic search by her family and those at the birthday party. They notified law enforcement and replayed home surveillance footage that showed the 9-year-old leaving with Mr. Gonzales. About that same time, the Levelland Police Department received a report of a vehicle parked in the middle of the street several miles from the location of the birthday party. Mr. Gonzales hit a residential mailbox and stopped in the road. While in the car, Mr. Gonzales sexually assaulted the girl by removing her clothes and touching her." More at DoJ.
West Texas American Red Cross disaster trailer stolen. "A disaster trailer owned by the West Texas American Red Cross has been stolen. The American Red Cross is working with law enforcement to find the people responsible. This trailer is used to support the community in times of need and its contents included disaster supplies such as cots, blankets, comfort kits, and PPE. The American Red Cross officials said although the theft is unfortunate it does not impede their ability to deliver assistance, services, and hope to those affected by disasters." Texas Freeze Sends Oil Higher, But Where Do Prices Go From Here? Experts Say “Up”. "Crude oil prices, which sank below zero last spring in response to unprecedented demand declines due to the pandemic, have gradually been rising since last November amid vaccine rollouts and hopes for a global economic recovery. The price of WTI has surged about 63% since early November. John Stoltzfus, chief investment strategist at New York-based Oppenheimer Asset Management, which manages $34.8 billion in assets, expects WTI oil to run up to $70 per barrel this year (before production picks up to meet demand) and then settle in a range of $55-$60 even as a global recovery gets underway. Stoltzfus says oil is getting a boost from a pickup in demand in anticipation of a global economic recovery as effective vaccines begin to stem the spread of Covid-19; the success OPEC has had in having its members comply with production limits it outlined earlier this year; and a “parallel restraint” in production by U.S. producers. Stoltzfus notes that the US dollar’s weakness has also helped boost the price of oil as foreign buyers (whose currencies are strengthening against the dollar) go “beyond buying the oil they need and move to stockpiling oil and related products.” Nate Fischer, chief investment strategist at Strategic Wealth Partners in Independence, Ohio, which manages $500 million in assets, says he thinks oil prices will remain locked in a range of between $50 and $65 per barrel “for the foreseeable future,” citing, among other things, the gradual emergence of renewables in the overall global energy mix. Indeed, big oil producers like BP, Total and ENI, among others, have already committed to lowering their oil and gas production in the coming years as they target carbon neutrality by about mid-century, under pressure from investors, creditors and environmentalists." The two hours that nearly destroyed the Texas electric grid. "The control room of the Texas electric grid is dominated by a Cineplex-sized screen along one wall. As outdoor temperatures plunged to arctic levels around the low-slung building 30 miles from Austin last Sunday night, all eyes were on it. The news wasn’t good. Electric demand for heat across the state was soaring, as expected, but green dots on the corner state map started flipping to red. Each was a regional power generator, and they were spontaneously shutting down — three coal plants followed quickly by a gas plant in Corpus Christi. Bill Magness, chief executive officer of the grid operator, was watching intently and understood instantly what was at stake. Below 59 and the state’s electrical system would face cascading blackouts that would take weeks or months to restore. In India in 2012, 700 million people were plunged into darkness in such a moment. Texas was “seconds and minutes” from such a catastrophe, Magness recalled. It shouldn’t have been happening. After the winter blackouts of 2011, plants should have protected themselves against such low temperatures. The basis of the Texas system is the market — demand soars, you make money. Demand was soaring last Sunday, but the plants were shutting down. If insufficient power came in, the grid wouldn’t be able to support the energy demand from customers and the other power plants that supply them, causing a cycle of dysfunction. So over the following hours, grid operators ordered the largest forced power outage in U.S. history." More at DallasNews.com or at Bloomberg.
Texas Blackout Reveals Deep Impact of Environmental Racism, Aid Organizers Say. "The parts of the state which took the biggest hit from Winter Storm Uri are largely under-resourced communities of color whose infrastructure has long been inadequate and neglected, mutual aid organizers say. These include areas of South Dallas and the border communities known as the colonias — informal settlements that lack basic necessities, often including potable water, septic or sewer systems, electricity, paved roads, or safe and sanitary housing. ... The climate-fueled storm, Higgins says, amplified longstanding issues of environmental racism, lack of development, and old and neglected infrastructure in the under-resourced neighborhoods of South Dallas. These communities have long suffered a cycle of environmental degradation after major highways broke up neighborhoods and invited heavy industry into the area, which in turn, has long taken an environmental and health toll on the community, creating a downward spiral." Gov. Greg Abbott wants power companies to “winterize.” Texas’ track record won’t make that easy. "Winterize. That’s the directive Gov. Greg Abbott gave to power companies and lawmakers Thursday when he called for a law and funding to better prepare Texas’ essential power infrastructure for the kind of extreme winter weather that created multiple crises this week. Energy experts said that in some cases, retrofitting plants to withstand cold could be extremely difficult and expensive in Texas. Many of those plants already skimped on such upgrades due to the infrequency of prolonged and widespread subfreezing temperatures in the state. That’s despite a 2011 winter storm that also caused power outages." More at Texas Tribune.
Texas officials block electricity providers from sending bills, disconnecting utilities for nonpayment. "“Disconnect for non pays cannot occur on a Sunday and that’s why we're acting today at this hour... trying to stop any from occurring tomorrow,” Walker said before the three-member commission approved the orders. Both Abbott and the commission's meetings come as more Texans are reporting receiving exorbitant electric bills despite not having power during the storm. One Texan, according to The New York Times, received a $16,752 electric bill. Not every resident will see the spikes in their bills. Abbott, speaking during a news conference Sunday in San Antonio, called the recent spike in energy bills "the top priority for the Texas Legislature right now" and said lawmakers were working on a bipartisan basis to help address the issue." City of Waco lifts water use restrictions, but leaks still put system under strain. "The city of Waco and McLennan County lifted calls for customers to conserve water Sunday night, ending two days of water rationing put in place to preserve a water system that remains under stress. More than 100 pipe breaks over the last several days threatened to deplete water pressure, but the city never had to issue a boil water notice, avoiding the fate of many cities across Texas in the wake of last week’s winter emergency. The city announced Sunday afternoon that laundries and car washes could reopen as of Sunday, and the county followed suit soon thereafter. “When many communities across Texas had to issue community wide boil water notices, Waco was able to keep the water flowing and avoid a community wide boil water notice,” Waco Mayor Dillon Meek said in a news release. “This is the result of a committed City staff and the community working together. I’m so proud of Waco. This was a difficult week and we have challenges days ahead but I know that Wacoans will continue to support each other because that is what we are all about.” Still, leaks resulting from the record stretch of subfreezing weather caused the city to have to pump 41 million gallons of water Sunday, about twice the normal amount, utility officials said." Conroe family files $100 million lawsuit after son's death during winter storm. ""Here we are in Houston, the energy capital of the country. We like to brag that it's energy independent, and yet we have people dying in their homes because we don't have any power," Buzbee said. "Due to global warming, we'll have more of these types of events and we need to be prepared for them. The companies need to be honest with us. This wasn't a rolling blackout. This is a total blackout, and they didn't tell us."" More at Chron.com.

Anger toward Texas governor grows in deadly storm's wake. "Abbott, a Republican, emerged that evening for a series of television interviews. In short, curt sentences, he told Texans in the Lubbock and Houston areas that he had issued an emergency order and called for an immediate legislative investigation of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the electrical grid. He angrily accused the council of not having a backup power supply and not sharing information with Texans, "even with the governor of Texas."" More at My San Antonio.
