Black Health Matters

Black Health Matters is creating a community database that empowers and emancipates heterogenous African/Black peoples by prioritizing their experiences, and their stories in health research. They recently launched the Transnational Survey, in addition to the Canadian National Survey. Learn more about Black Health Matters.

Supporting the Black Health Matters Fund supports
“Black Health Matters: National and Transnational COVID-19 Impact, Resistance and Intervention Strategies project” led by Dr. Roberta Timothy
You may have read about IHPME alumnus and FitzGerald Leadership Circle member, Dr. Mireille Norris in a previous edition of Your Dalla Lana. Read her below thoughts on giving to the Black Health Matters fund.

I am grateful for the education that has allowed me to be in a position now where I can give back to my community. As a black person, born in Haiti, educated in Quebec and at the University of Toronto, I feel a profound sense of gratitude and privilege for my current position as well as a duty towards members of the Black community who support me and who may look up to me for guidance and inspiration.

Culturally insensitive care results in delayed interventions and personal trauma. I have witnessed this with family members receiving mental health services, as well as when my 28-year-old, pregnant cousin died of complications of sickle cell anemia. Black health matters, the time has come to challenge health inequities afflicting the Black community.

Donate to The Black Health Matters Fund

Kristine Collins, Director, Academic Programs, University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies, on why she donated to the Black Health Matters fund.

Anti-racism work is ongoing and requires an investment of refection, time, effort and action. Supporting this fund is a small action to support important research that serves to highlight the voices of African/Black communities related to the current COVID-19 pandemic. This research is timely and highly relevant in our current social, political and public health context.

Professor Paul Corey, FitzGerald Leadership Circle member, reminisces on his connection to Dr. John G. FitzGerald

John G. FitzGerald’s grandparents came from Northern Ireland, just as my father did.  I received my PhD from the School of Hygiene at Johns Hopkins University, the same university from which John benefitted from a short stay. I received a scholarship from the USA government, and Dr. FitzGerald received strong support from the same government. The US believed tax-payer dollars supporting research and education in other countries would benefit their country, as well as the recipient. Shortly after my wife, daughter and I returned home, I showed up unexpectedly on the doorstep of Dr. Harding Leriche, chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Our 1-hour conversation ended with an offer of a position as an assistant professor. I started in January 1968, with my first office in the FitzGerald building, and over my career, I supervised about 45 graduate theses

DLSPH/PHAA Alumni-Student Mentorship Program Launch
On February 24, 2021, the DLSPH and the Public Health Alumni Association (PHAA) launched the 2021 Alumni-Student Mentorship Program. Over 60 alumni and students were joined by Dean Steini Brown and PHAA President Jennifer Mary Bell to mark the start of this year's virtual program. Since 2013, the program has matched hundreds of first-year Public Health Sciences students across multiple program streams with DLSPH alumni, to support future public health professionals in their academic and career journeys.

The mentorship program would not be possible without the commitment of DLSPH alumni, the enthusiasm of DLSPH students, and the tireless work put in by the PHAA mentorship committee. A special thank you to everyone involved!
To learn more about the program, please contact Zahraa Saab and Sarah Ko, Program Co-Chairs, at public.health.alumni@utoronto.ca.
