Dear  member of Waterways Experiences

What a challenging year it has been!  As we look forward to our Waterways Experiences AGM on 10 April, we can also look back at a year which has been like no other we've ever known.

It may be that, like me, you were able in 2020 to get afloat for a while.  If so, you will know how lucky you are.  For most of the year normal boating activity has been impossible and WExp's activities have been very severely curtailed.

I don't know how many of you keep up to date with our administrative activities; I suspect that most WExp members only glance at the proceedings of the Trustees, Steering Group and Teams and then pass on to other things - and I can hardly blame you.  In fact, some of the administrative procedures have been bedevilled with disagreements to such an extent that it has been difficult to summon up the courage to open emails at the beginning of the day.  Of course, a good deal of this can be put down to the Covid19 situation; if we were able to get out on the water things would look very different.  But still, there is no excuse for some of the behaviour we have seen.

I'm pleased to report that this spirit of complaint has not extended to the Trustees.  I thank them all that our meetings have been good-natured and positive at all times.  Trustees, however, are there to take final responsibility for all that goes on in the charity, so we cannot overlook the disagreements and divisions that have appeared. You will note that nowhere am I mentioning any names; would that everyone would do the same.

My sincere wish is to improve our governance by creating a strong administrative system which can enable us to make good decisions in a democratic way.  Such a structure is almost in place, but it will not work unless it is respected.  If someone does not like a decision, or feels that another member should not be in the position they occupy, then there is a correct response to that.  Elections take place at the AGM and decisions are made in committee.  Use that structure to vote for what you want – and if your vote does not prevail, go along with it with good grace.

For some time it has been our wish that most Trustees should not also occupy Steering Group roles.  We have been moving towards that aim and have at least four candidates as trustees who are not involved in other administrative roles.  As part of the rolling programme, too, some, including myself, have to stand for reelection.  Please look carefully when the time comes and use your votes wisely.

This year, therefore, it is even more important to attend our AGM and to vote. But first comes the matter of nominations: new trustee nominations can be made from 28th February and the deadline for nominations is 10th March. The AGM itself is on Saturday 10th April on Zoom at 2pm. Let's ensure that WExp goes into the new year stronger and more determined than ever – and remember, everyone's opinion is valid and should be listened to.

Paul Bennett

Chair of Trustees
