Join us in the this conversation with Bryn White to learn how local governments and NGOs in the South Okanagan used a shared environmental planning specialist to:
- Create consistent baseline information across the region to address ecological values, including: ecosystem mapping, identification of environmentally sensitive areas, and special ecological features and hotspots.
- Provide leading edge information for land use bylaw provisions (official community plans), development permit areas (derived from ecosystem mapping), and more.
- Connect local governments and the development community with ecological expertise, to ensure sensitive ecosystems and habitat corridors are recognized in planning approval processes.

For the past two decades, Bryn has passionately fostered conservation and sustainable land use planning, by facilitating collaboration between governments, First Nations, non-government groups, academic institutions and the private sector. Bryn was the 2010 recipient of The Nature Trust of BC’s Champion Award in the Professional Sector, and the 2019 recipient of the Okanagan Similkameen Conservation Alliance's Outstanding in Nature Award. She has served on the Real Estate Foundation of BC’s Land Awards Committee, the Board of the Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia, Okanagan Basin Water Board Stewardship Council, Stewardship Centre of BC Board, past member of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Pacific Region Board, and the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation of BC Stewardship Technical Committee.
Bryn's leadership highlights include:
- Developing a unique approach to cost sharing and building capacity for environmental expertise within local governments in the SOSCP partnership. Established a shared environmental planner resource for 10 years in collaboration with three municipalities and one regional district.
- Establishing the South Okanagan Conservation Fund.
- Developing a “how to guide” as a critical resource for local governments and community organizations interested in establishing their own local conservation funds – see it here: https://soscp.org/about-soscp/conservationfundguidebc/
- Leading the development of Keeping Nature in Our Future: A Biodiversity Conservation Strategy for the South Okanagan and Similkameen.
- Managing the South Okanagan Similkameen Conservation Program (SOSCP) for 14 years, facilitating 50 government, non-government, First Nations, and academic institutions in working together to conserve the rare and endangered South Okanagan Similkameen landscape.
