March: Kids & Intergenerational Living in Cohousing

Co-housers from Cedar and existing cohousing communities will share their thoughts on the community connections and multigenerational living opportunities that set cohousing apart from other living arrangements. What does this look like in practice and what does Cedar aspire to create?

Cohousing communities allow children to be raised in a “village” of caring people and provide their parents with opportunities to sharing some of their parenting with other adults. By sharing common space and redundant belongings, adults find ready companionship when they want it with people who share their interests or want to learn from others with different life experiences.

CIRCLE UPDATES
Circles are the member and explorer working groups that make our project happen!
Site Search - Our mandate is to find sites suitable for our project in the St Paul or Minneapolis urban core. We've been engaging with planning departments to identify areas with suitable zoning and proximity to transit, and engaging professionals (e.g., architects, brokers) essential to move our project forward. Progress is being made on all fronts.
  • We are interviewing architectural firms with Katie McCamant, our cohousing consultant, that will help evaluate sites, design our building and work with city planning officials.
  • We've identified numerous possible sites based on leads from brokers and city planning officials and internet searches.
Outreach - Our mandate is to find households interested in joining our cohousing project by planning and publicizing public events and maintaining contact with CCLLC members, explorers, and followers. Progress is being made here as well.
  • We're busy planning and publicizing public events to find and engage individuals interested in exploring living in the cohousing community we are seeking to create.
Governance/Legal/Finance - Our mandate is to ensure that we operate consistent with laws and regulations, all voices in our community are heard and respected, and that participant financial contributions are managed prudently.
  • We've hired a lawyer specializing in common interest communities to counsel us over the life-cycle of our project.
