Inaugural NORRAG in Conversation webinar series with the CIES President, Professor Iveta Silova

Look out for the inaugural “NORRAG in Conversation” webinar series which will feature distinguished scholars, public intellectuals and leaders in education and development. The first 30-minute webinar on “Decolonizing international cooperation in education" will feature Prof Iveta Silova, CIES President, this spring. The webinar will be moderated by Professor Gita Steiner-Khamsi. In preparation for this talk, we would like to give you the opportunity to ask questions to the guest speaker, using this Padlet

Global Launch

NORRAG hosts launch of Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies 

On 25 January 2021, NORRAG supported this online event which welcomed over 450 attendees. 127 million children in the world are out of school due to crises brought on by pandemics, conflicts, and natural disasters. As Geneva is the world’s humanitarian capital, hosting a rich tapestry of academic, non-governmental and private sector organisations, the Hub aims to create synergies across sectors to make joint action a reality. Launch of UNESCO-IESALC report: Women in higher education

NORRAG partnered with UNESCO-IESALC to launch their report, "Women in higher education: has the female advantage put an end to gender inequalities?" on 8 March 2021 in honour of International Women's Day. The video of the event is coming soon to the NORRAG and UNESCO-IESALC websites, in the meantime, you can read the report here.

KIX Webinar on teachers as agents of change

On 24 February 2021, NORRAG, together with the Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education, HertsCam Network, CairoCam Network, Teacher Leadership in Kazakhstan, School for All Educational Foundation, Soros Foundation Kazakhstan and ProDidactica Education Centre Moldova, hosted the 6th KIX EAP webinar on the topic: “Teachers as Agents of Change: Supporting, Enabling, and Empowering.” Attended by 260 participants from 44 countries, the webinar was conducted in English with simultaneous interpretation into Russian, Arabic and Kazakh. NSI 04: New Philanthropy and the Disruption of Global Education available in English, Russian and Simplified Chinese Characters

Translations and contextualizations of NSI 04 have been added. Visit the NORRAG Resource Library to access the Russian and Mandarin Chinese contextualizations. French and Arabic versions are currently underway and will be added shortly. NSI 04 in English I Russian I Simplified Chinese Characters.

NORRAG's Innovative Finance for Education (IFE) Project releases two new case studies

As part of the IFE project, two new case studies have been published. The Zaya Learning Labs case study explores an education technology (EdTech) company in Mumbai, India which improves access to additional learning resources for underserved populations. The Skills and Knowledge for Youth (SKY) Project is led by Helvetas in Ethiopia. The case study highlights their use of incentives to encourage long-term gainful employment of youth. IIEP-UNESCO and NORRAG launch specialized course on “Using data and information for crisis-sensitive educational planning”

Natural hazards and conflicts can devastate education systems. To address threats head on and to protect the right to quality education for all, we need reliable data. For 8 weeks, beginning in 21 April 2021, participants will gain the technical skills to use data – from gathering, processing, to analyzing – for planning education in crisis contexts. Read more...

NORRAG Executive Director, Moira V. Faul, recently participated in and gave closing remarks during a webinar devoted to understanding how the future can benefit from current efforts to decolonise education. Climate change is not a new issue for education, but new levels of consensus and concern are emerging, suggesting that new policy developments may follow, with hopefully a stronger connection to the educational opportunities, challenges and inequalities around the world and in particular in the Global South. The call will be advertised on our social media channels.

NORRAG Senior Research Associates contribute to UNESCO’s teacher policy development guide

UNESCO’s International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 recently published the Teacher Development Policy Guide. NORRAG Senior Research Associates, Patrick Montjouridès and Ji Liu, were among the members of the UNESCO Teacher Task Force who contributed to this report. The Guide calls on governments to develop a national teacher policy to take participatory and inclusive approaches. Read more...

NORRAG Advisor presents on the impact of COVID-19 on girls’ schooling in Pakistan

NORRAG Advisor, Wajeeha Bajwa, participated in a panel at the 23rd annual Sustainable Development Conference (SDC), jointly organized by the Malala Fund and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in Islamabad, Pakistan. With 49% of Pakistani girls out of school, many children have to travel miles to access the internet for their lessons. The panel proposed solutions, especially for female students in conservative regions. Read more...

NORRAG is looking to establishing a focus group to test the search function on the NORRAG Website and NORRAG Resource Library. The aim of the working group is to help us improve our search functionalities. We will ask you to perform searches using real words and themes linked to your research and work on global education policies and provide feedback to us either on Zoom or by email. Please contact us if you wish to take part in this focus group.

Call for papers: Special issue on education in pandemics in the Journal on Education in Emergencies

The Journal on Education in Emergencies (JEiE), a peer-reviewed journal established by the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE), is seeking research articles and field note submissions for an upcoming Special Issue on Education in Pandemics and public health crises. The publication will respond to the COVID-19 crisis and the urgent need for evidence on effective preparedness, mitigation strategies, and post-pandemic recovery. Learn more about the selection process and submit an abstract by April 15, 2021. 

Job announcement: Two PhD positions at Aarhus University

The two PhD fellows will be part of the three-year research project, “Asserting the Nation: Comparative studies on the rise of neo-nationalism in higher education.” The project explores how neo-nationalism has affected European and national higher education policy in France, Poland and Denmark. Learn more about how to apply for the positions which start in September 2021. Deadline: 15 March 2021.
