Lectures will be released on YouTube every Thursday in March at 12:30 pm EST, and and will be accessible here. A live conversation reflecting on the lecture will follow on Zoom every Friday in March at 12:30 pm EST; registration is required for the conversations only.

WEEK 1: MARCH 4 AND 5

Picasso, Spaniard in Paris

The boy prodigy, academically trained, transplanted himself at age 20 to the fertile soil of the Parisian avant-garde. In the first lecture of the series, John Walsh explores Picasso’s swift evolution. This lecture will be released on Thursday, March 4, at 12:30 pm EST. Join the conversation with Walsh on Friday, March 5, at 12:30 pm EST. Learn more.

WEEK 2: MARCH 11 AND 12

Cubism, Picasso, and Still Life

For Picasso and Georges Braque, still life was a lab for pictorial experiments. In the second lecture of the series, John Walsh relates Cubist inventions to Picasso’s Dog and Cock (1921). This lecture will be released on Thursday, March 11, at 12:30 pm EST. Join the conversation with Walsh on Friday, March 12, at 12:30 pm EST. Learn more.

WEEK 3: MARCH 18 AND 19

Cubism, Picasso, and the Human Figure

Lovers, portrait sitters, bathers, mythological creatures—all were material for Picasso’s expressive manipulations. In the third lecture of the series, John Walsh explores the figure in Picasso’s art. This lecture will be released on Thursday, March 18, at 12:30 pm EST. Join the conversation with Walsh on Friday, March 19, at 12:30 pm EST. Learn more.

WEEK 4: MARCH 25 AND 26

Picasso, Life, and Death

Picasso treated great themes of older art, from peace and war to youth and old age. In the final lecture of the series, John Walsh shows how the work First Steps (1943) in the Yale University Art Gallery’s collection originated. This lecture will be released on Thursday, March 25, at 12:30 pm EST. Join the conversation with Walsh on Friday, March 26, at 12:30 pm EST. Learn more.
