Greetings from a Rebel City

This week marks the anniversary of the Old Market Riot in 1932. 2021 also sees the ten year anniversary of the Stokes Croft riots, the 190 year anniversary of the Bristol Riots in 1831, and we'll celebrate the anniversary of last year's public toppling of Colston's statue. At the PRSC we believe that remembering and marking the history of popular protest, activism and social movements is hugely important as we look at the contemporary struggles for environmental change, housing reform, and reducing racial and social inequality.

Next week we'll be unveiling our plans for the School of Activism 2.0 - a two week programme of talks and workshops to empower and inspire. Our amazingly exciting lineup features an evening we're calling Rebel History, looking at our relationship to history and protest, with poet Lawrence Hoo of Cargo, radical artist Michael Barnes-Wynters, Richard Jones of Tangent Books and author Mike Manson of the Bristol Radical History Group. Elsewhere in the programme is a screening of short film Battling For Bristol, which looks at 100 years of protests in the city, with director Colin Thomas joining us for a Q&A.

For those of you with an interest in the history of protest, activism and the struggle for equality, we are also delighted to be exclusively offering Lawrence Hoo's book Cargo in the PRSC Shop, as well as a large collection of publications by the Bristol Radical History Group. For more historical activism on a local level, check out this project that the PRSC developed with Journey to Justice, and see the public brouhaha that accompanied the project.

The Human Nature Project

Within human nature lies the ability to create, connect and adapt to change. The Human Nature Project's ambition is to strengthen our emotional connection with the more-than-human world, while at the same time strengthening our sense of connection to each other, and to our own individual mental health and resilience. Launching in Bristol in April 2021, set in the two woodland sites of Blaise Castle dairy (for Tuesday sessions) and Leigh Woods green barn (for Wednesday sessions), the Human Nature Project will provide members of the public with free access to a rolling timetable of seven different two-hour workshops exploring confidence, character, creativity, curiosity, choice, centredness and connection. The Regulation of Genetic Technologies

Between 7 January and 17 March 2021, the UK Government is hosting an online consultation on the regulation of genetic technologies and, notably, the technique of gene editing. The Land Workers Alliance disagree that the problems in our food system will be solved by a techno-fix such as gene-editing. Rather, they are concerned that gene-editing will further reduce biodiversity, increase reliance on petro-chemical inputs and disempower farmers. They'll put together a Q&A, and are offering some 'stock' answers to help you respond to the consultation. Find out more here »
